From Shenzhen to Barcelona, cargo moves from Dongguan and Shenzhen factories via Yantian, crosses a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and is discharged at a port where a class 9 container cannot leave without a dangerous goods authorisation from the Port Authority and Capitanía.

The Spanish side checks RII-PYA registration alongside the EU battery rules. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • RII-PYA number
  • Spanish-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI

Route profile

How Shenzhen → Barcelona differs from other lanes

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Shenzhen to Barcelona

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into Spain, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Factory stuffing in Dongguan, loading at Yantian: avoid a second opening

Much Shenzhen battery export is stuffed inland and trucked to the terminal. In May 2026 Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA ran a cross-regional 'one-box' pilot: four battery containers were inspected jointly at the Dongguan factory and loaded at Yantian without being opened again. It shows that the inspection record made at the factory is what matters at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Origin port

Packaging certificates are now visible to both customs and MSA

Much of Shenzhen's battery cargo is made in Dongguan, home to more than 500 battery firms. In September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA began sharing dangerous-goods packaging certificate data, described as a first in China, and committed to joint action against concealed and false declarations. The one-box route to Yantian, which had moved 409 containers by then, rests on that same record.

What Anxin does: We compare the packaging certificate with the MSA cargo report (UN number, packaging code, number of packages) before either goes in, so the shared data shows no gap.

  3. Sea corridor

Mediterranean services are back in the Red Sea more than others

Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 show 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services routed via the Red Sea, against 27% for North Europe. For Barcelona the Suez routing is therefore the likely one, and it runs through Bab el-Mandeb, which the JMIC rated SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026: the Houthis describe their blockade as selective, and they now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Barcelona uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  4. Destination port

A pickup authorisation from the Port Authority and Capitanía

To collect a dangerous-goods container in Barcelona, the consignee's agent needs a valid authorisation issued by the Port Authority together with the Capitanía Marítima, requested from the port's dangerous goods department. It states its validity and safety conditions, and an expired one has to be replaced before the truck can collect.

What Anxin does: We ask the Barcelona importer to have its agent request the authorisation before the ship arrives, and send the agent the DG declaration and packing list as soon as the vessel sails from Shenzhen.

  5. Import country

    Quarterly declarations include built-in batteries

Loose cells and batteries built into electrical equipment, removable or not, both fall under the Spanish register. Declarations are quarterly, errors can be corrected until 25 January of the following year, and changes to registration data must be updated within a month.

What Anxin does: When batteries travel inside devices we list battery quantity and chemistry separately on the packing list, so the importer can report them without reopening cartons.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Shenzhen to Barcelona

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Shenzhen

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Battery quantity and chemistry listed separately for batteries in equipment

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For import into Spain

  • Dangerous goods pickup authorisation requested by the consignee's agent
  • RII-PYA registration number of the Spanish producer
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Spain before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Barcelona.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Shenzhen to Barcelona

The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Spain requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
