Lithium batteries for Colombo go from Fujian's battery makers through Xiamen port. On the way they face an Indian Ocean passage after the Malacca Strait, and they arrive at the port of Colombo.

Sri Lanka adds manifests through ASYHUB and fully electronic customs declarations from October 2026. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Xiamen export
  • Online packaging appraisal
  • SLSI scope
  • ASYHUB manifest

Route profile

How Xiamen → Colombo differs from other lanes

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Indian Ocean

After the Malacca Strait comes the Indian Ocean, where the south-west monsoon and two cyclone seasons decide the pace.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Xiamen → Colombo route

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Colombo and the Sri Lanka market.

  1. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  2. Origin port

Strong winds in the Taiwan Strait from day one

Leaving Xiamen, ships are in the Taiwan Strait at once. A Chinese government weather account says the strait's funnel effect adds 1–2 Beaufort levels to the wind, and that the north-east monsoon of winter and spring brings force 7 or more on about two days in three. Lashing on container ships should be secured accordingly.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  3. Sea corridor

Theft at night in the Malacca and Singapore Straits

ReCAAP counted 21 armed-robbery incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in the first half of 2026, down 74% but still 60% of all Asian cases. They are mostly night-time thefts of engine spares from bulk carriers and barges; a container ship bound for Colombo is a less usual target but uses the same lanes.

What Anxin does: We keep the vessel and voyage on the booking record for Colombo, so a carrier incident or delay notice can be matched to the shipment straight away.

  4. Import country

Classification decides whether SLSI inspection applies

SLSI's compulsory inspection list covers primary cells (HS 8506.10 and 8506.80) and lead-acid starter batteries, but not lithium-ion batteries under 8507.60. The HS code on the documents for Colombo therefore decides whether an SLSI inspection is needed, especially for mixed shipments.

What Anxin does: We check the HS codes on the invoice with the importer, and flag any primary cells in the shipment that would bring SLSI inspection.

  5. Import country

    Manifests go through ASYHUB

Since 7 May 2025 Sri Lanka Customs has required manifests to be submitted through ASYHUB. The battery description and DG details the carrier files for Colombo come from the booking made in Xiamen, so they have to be right from the start.

What Anxin does: We give the carrier final cargo and DG data at booking, so the ASYHUB manifest does not need amending after arrival.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Xiamen to Colombo

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Xiamen

  • For ESS: carriage type (container ship or multipurpose), class 9 terminal and pre-voyage meeting confirmed
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Carrier's revised arrival reconfirmed in the cyclone season before booking onward transport
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Xiamen filings, the carrier booking and the Sri Lanka import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
