Lithium batteries for Ravenna go out of Xiamen's Haicang and Songyu terminals on the Taiwan Strait. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Ravenna.

The Italian side adds the registropile.it registration to the EU battery rules. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • Xiamen export
  • Italian-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

What sets Xiamen → Ravenna apart

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Xiamen → Ravenna shipments get held up: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Ravenna and the Italy market.

  1. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Ravenna

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Ravenna most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Ravenna uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

The ICS2 entry summary is due before loading in Xiamen

For Ravenna, EU security pre-filing happens at the other end of the voyage: the ICS2 entry summary must reach the system 24 hours before the container is loaded in Xiamen. No filing means no loading, and a missing EORI number is enough to reject it.

What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Xiamen cut-off.

  4. Import country

The register number belongs on invoices and delivery papers

Once registered, the producer has 30 days to show its register number on all commercial documents, and each year by 31 March it reports the batteries placed on the Italian market. If the batteries arrive inside equipment, the importer is also an EEE producer and needs the separate RAEE register.

What Anxin does: We put the Italian register number the importer gives us on the commercial invoice we prepare with the shipper, and ask whether the goods are loose batteries or built into equipment.

  5. Import country

Registro pile: a representative in Italy for foreign producers

Italy's battery producer register is run by the Chambers of Commerce at registropile.it, and registration must be in place before the producer starts operating in Italy. A producer based abroad registers through its own Italian representative, at that representative's Chamber of Commerce, with a digital signature. Membership of a national collective or individual scheme is a condition of the filing.

What Anxin does: We ask the Italian importer who files as producer and for the register number, since a Chinese manufacturer cannot sign the Italian filing itself.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Xiamen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Italy before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Ravenna.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Xiamen to Ravenna

On all commercial documents, within 30 days of registration. Producers also report the batteries they placed on the market each year by 31 March.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
