Lithium batteries for Ashdod go from Fujian's battery makers through Xiamen port. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at a port where ships carrying hazardous materials need prior approval and a HAZMAT list 48 hours ahead.

Israel accepts EU conformity for many products since 2025, but the importer still declares it and keeps a product file. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Online packaging appraisal
  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • Importer declaration and product file
  • Hebrew label artwork
  • HS classification (pre-ruling if unsure)

Route profile

The Xiamen → Ashdod route in brief

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Xiamen to Ashdod

They run from the Xiamen terminal through the voyage to Ashdod and the Israel import file.

  1. Origin port

Strong winds in the Taiwan Strait from day one

Leaving Xiamen, ships are in the Taiwan Strait at once. A Chinese government weather account says the strait's funnel effect adds 1–2 Beaufort levels to the wind, and that the north-east monsoon of winter and spring brings force 7 or more on about two days in three. Lashing on container ships should be secured accordingly.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  3. Sea corridor

    Suez itself is working normally

The JMIC's September 2026 update rated the northern Red Sea and Suez Canal MODERATE, with the canal operating in both directions and container lines returning selectively, and the Eastern Mediterranean LOW. The risk on this corridor is concentrated at the southern entrance of the Red Sea rather than at the canal.

What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.

  4. Destination port

Ship approval and a HAZMAT list 48 hours ahead

Under a temporary procedure Ashdod Port issued on 13 June 2025, to apply until further notice, any vessel carrying hazardous materials needs prior approval from Israel's Administration of Shipping and Ports, and ships with classes 1, 2.1 or 2.3 are kept out. Agents must send a full HAZMAT list, split into import, export and transit, 48 hours before arrival, or the ship's entry may be delayed.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier whether the procedure is still in force for its call at Ashdod, and give it the class 9 details at booking so they are in the 48-hour HAZMAT list.

  5. Import country

SI 62133 for portable lithium batteries

SI 62133 Part 2 is Israel's standard for secondary lithium cells and batteries for portable applications. Test reports to the IEC 62133-2 equivalent are the usual evidence, and the importer needs them before the goods reach Ashdod.

What Anxin does: We collect the IEC 62133-2 test report from the manufacturer with the UN 38.3 summary, and pass both to the importer before booking.

Before you book

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Xiamen filings, the carrier booking and the Israel import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Xiamen → Ashdod: questions we are asked

By their classification in Israel's Customs and Purchase Tax Tariff, which sets taxes and which permits apply; Israeli Customs gives free pre-rulings.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
