From Xiamen to Copenhagen, cargo moves through Xiamen, the port for more than 90% of Fujian's lithium battery exports, crosses a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic, and is discharged at the port of Copenhagen.

The Danish side adds the producer responsibility register to the EU battery rules. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Xiamen export
  • Online packaging appraisal
  • Danish-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

The Xiamen → Copenhagen route in brief

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Import country

Denmark

Registration with Dansk Producentansvar via virk.dk, a Danish authorised representative for foreign sellers, and the EU-wide battery and ICS2 duties.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Xiamen to Copenhagen

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Copenhagen and at customs in Denmark.

  1. Origin port

Strong winds in the Taiwan Strait from day one

Leaving Xiamen, ships are in the Taiwan Strait at once. A Chinese government weather account says the strait's funnel effect adds 1–2 Beaufort levels to the wind, and that the north-east monsoon of winter and spring brings force 7 or more on about two days in three. Lashing on container ships should be secured accordingly.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Origin port

Xiamen ESS on multipurpose vessels and class 9 berths

Xiamen's energy-storage transport guide 2.0 (August 2026) notes that some ESS containers sail on multipurpose ships and calls for a pre-voyage meeting with the terminal and lashing contractors. It names the terminals qualified for class 9: Xiamen Hyundai terminal, Yuanhai Tongda, and Haixiang berths 7–8.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm early whether the carrier offers container-ship or multipurpose carriage, which qualified terminal is used, and who attends the pre-voyage meeting.

  3. Sea corridor

The inbound leg's emissions now count under EU ETS

Because Copenhagen is an EU port, container ships of 5,000 GT or more calling there fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, which covers half the emissions of the voyage from China. Lines surrendered allowances for 70% of those emissions in 2025 and must cover 100% from 2027, a cost that can reach shippers as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  4. Import country

The truck leg out of Copenhagen runs under ADR

Once the container leaves the terminal by road, ADR applies: Directive 2008/68/EC makes EU countries use it for domestic dangerous goods journeys as well as international ones. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E), so the haulier in Denmark has to plan around category E tunnels, and damaged or defective batteries fall under special provision 376 and packing instructions P908 or P911 instead of P903.

What Anxin does: We give the Denmark haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Xiamen.

  5. Import country

Safety information in a language Denmark accepts

An importer has to ensure that batteries are accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in Denmark can easily understand, as the Member State determines. Inserts and carton print are much simpler to adjust before packing in China.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Denmark requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Xiamen to Copenhagen

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Xiamen end

  • For ESS: carriage type (container ship or multipurpose), class 9 terminal and pre-voyage meeting confirmed
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • EU declaration of conformity and CE marking photo from the manufacturer
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging

Carrier and voyage

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • Consignee EORI and HS-level description to the ENS filer before loading
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

At the Denmark end

  • Instructions and safety information in the language Denmark requires
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Dansk Producentansvar registration (or Danish authorised representative)

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Xiamen export filings, the carrier booking and the Denmark import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Xiamen → Copenhagen route

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Copenhagen. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.

Yes. Xiamen MSA reported 104 ESS containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston in June 2026. Xiamen's ESS guide 2.0 requires a pre-voyage meeting and use of a class 9 qualified terminal.
