This route runs out of Xiamen's Haicang and Songyu terminals on the Taiwan Strait, then follows a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane; at the far end is the port of Vassiliko Bay.

Cyprus applies the EU Battery Regulation, starting with registration in its own national producer register. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Online packaging appraisal
  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Consignee EORI
  • National producer registration

Route profile

How Xiamen → Vassiliko Bay differs from other lanes

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Xiamen and Vassiliko Bay: 6 points

They run from the Xiamen terminal through the voyage to Vassiliko Bay and the Cyprus import file.

  1. Origin port

Energy-storage units may go on multipurpose ships

Xiamen's energy-storage transport guide 2.0 (August 2026) notes that some ESS containers are carried on multipurpose ships and requires a pre-voyage meeting with the terminal and lashing parties. It also lists the terminals with class 9 qualification: Xiamen Hyundai terminal, Yuanhai Tongda, and Haixiang berths 7–8.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm early whether the carrier offers container-ship or multipurpose carriage, which qualified terminal is used, and who attends the pre-voyage meeting.

  2. Origin port

Xiamen MSA's 'one ship, one plan' for large battery cargo

Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting at which ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to sailing. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston on a multipurpose ship.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  3. Sea corridor

If the service goes round Africa instead

The 43% of Mediterranean services not using the Red Sea sail round the Cape of Good Hope, then back through Gibraltar. SAMSA estimates about 200 of the 576 containers lost at sea in 2024 went overboard near the Cape, 35% of the year's total.

What Anxin does: On Cape sailings we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  4. Import country

The truck leg out of Vassiliko Bay runs under ADR

Road delivery from Vassiliko Bay is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Cyprus haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Xiamen.

  5. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Cyprus has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Vassiliko Bay.

What Anxin does: We pass the Cyprus importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  6. Import country

Safety documentation for stationary storage systems

Since 18 August 2024 a stationary battery energy storage system placed on the EU market must be safe in normal operation, and its technical documentation must show testing against the Annex V safety parameters, from thermal shock and short-circuit protection to over-discharge and thermal propagation. Buyers of ESS cabinets in Cyprus increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Cyprus we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Xiamen to Vassiliko Bay

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Before loading in Xiamen

  • For ESS: carriage type (container ship or multipurpose), class 9 terminal and pre-voyage meeting confirmed
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For the importer in Cyprus

  • Haulier in Cyprus briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Instructions and safety information in the language Cyprus requires

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Xiamen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Cyprus before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Vassiliko Bay.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
