This route runs from Fujian's battery makers through Xiamen port, then follows a long voyage ending in the North Atlantic or the Gulf of St Lawrence; at the far end is the port of St. John's.

On the Canadian side the carrier's eManifest is due before loading and the road leg follows TDG conditions. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • Xiamen export
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account

Route profile

The Xiamen → St. John's route in brief

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Atlantic Canada, the St Lawrence and the North Atlantic

Atlantic Canada and St Lawrence waters: icebreaking in winter, hurricane-force storms from October to April.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Xiamen → St. John's route

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at St. John's and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

Xiamen MSA's 'one ship, one plan' for large battery cargo

Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting at which ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to sailing. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston on a multipurpose ship.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  2. Origin port

Xiamen's fast appraisal needs matching data

Through the single window, Xiamen Customs now issues the lithium battery packaging use-appraisal certificate after automatic pre-review matching: roughly 10 minutes in a case reported in August 2026, compared with about half a day for the former on-site inspection. Only products that pass pre-review as compliant and valid get the fast path; mismatches return to inspection.

What Anxin does: We check the product data, UN38.3 summary and packaging codes against the application before it is submitted, so the certificate comes through pre-review rather than falling back to an on-site check.

  3. Sea corridor

Panama or Suez: the routing question for St. John's

The first half of a voyage to St. John's goes either through Panama, where Gatun Lake sets the Neopanamax draft (a planned cut was postponed in September 2026), or through Suez and the Mediterranean, where Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing the service uses and quote the options separately.

  4. Import country

IMDG papers work on the road leg, with Canadian conditions

TDG Regulations s. 9.3 let an international consignment move by road to or from St. John's under IMDG classification, marks, labels and documents. The shipping document must still be legible in English or French and show a 24-hour telephone number, and a container must carry placards under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

  5. Import country

English and French on consumer labels

Canada's consumer packaging rules require most mandatory label information on prepackaged consumer products in both English and French. Only the dealer's name and address may be in one language, and imported goods that do not state their origin need 'imported by / importé par' before it.

What Anxin does: For retail-packed goods going to St. John's, we check the carton and retail-box artwork for the bilingual text before production is packed.

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Xiamen export filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Xiamen → St. John's: questions we are asked

Only if the importer is enrolled in release prior to payment with financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal. Since 20 May 2025, importers without security pay duties and taxes at release.

NOAA's storm study found hurricane-force winter storms from October to April, most often in January.

For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
