This route runs through Xiamen, the port for more than 90% of Fujian's lithium battery exports, then follows the open North Pacific, where weather is the main risk; at the far end is the port of Prince Rupert.

On the Canadian side the carrier's eManifest is due before loading and the road leg follows TDG conditions. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Xiamen export
  • Online packaging appraisal
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account

Route profile

What sets Xiamen → Prince Rupert apart

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Transpacific (North Pacific)

No canal or Red Sea passage, but a North Pacific crossing where winter storms have collapsed container stacks.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Xiamen and Prince Rupert: 5 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Prince Rupert and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  2. Origin port

Strong winds in the Taiwan Strait from day one

Leaving Xiamen, ships are in the Taiwan Strait at once. A Chinese government weather account says the strait's funnel effect adds 1–2 Beaufort levels to the wind, and that the north-east monsoon of winter and spring brings force 7 or more on about two days in three. Lashing on container ships should be secured accordingly.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  3. Sea corridor

An open-ocean crossing where weather is the main risk

From Xiamen the drawn corridor to Prince Rupert runs across the North Pacific without a canal or Red Sea passage, so weather replaces chokepoints as the risk. The ONE Apus, bound from Yantian to Long Beach in November 2020, had a stack collapse in a storm about 1,600 nautical miles north-west of Hawaii; her owners said more than 1,900 containers could be lost or damaged, up to 40 of them hazmat.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings especially, we review blocking and bracing on stuffing photos against the CINS points before sealing, and make sure the DG declaration is complete, so a damaged box can be identified and handled correctly.

  4. Import country

BC producers need an EPR plan by December 2026

Battery-containing products, portable power stations and replacement batteries sold in British Columbia fall under a new EPR category: plans are due by 15 December 2026 and programs must operate by 1 October 2027. For goods landed at Prince Rupert, whoever counts as the producer has to be ready.

What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Prince Rupert, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

  5. Import country

A 24-hour number and English or French documents for the Canadian road leg

Canada accepts IMDG marking and documentation for the truck move out of Prince Rupert (TDG s. 9.3), provided the shipping document is legible in English or French, gives a 24-hour number and the container is placarded under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Xiamen → Prince Rupert

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

In Xiamen, before the box is loaded

  • For ESS: carriage type (container ship or multipurpose), class 9 terminal and pre-voyage meeting confirmed
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Stuffing photos before, during and after packing, checked for blocking and bracing
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For the importer in Canada

  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg
  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Xiamen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Prince Rupert.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Xiamen to Prince Rupert

Only if the importer is enrolled in release prior to payment with financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal. Since 20 May 2025, importers without security pay duties and taxes at release.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
