This route runs from Fujian's battery makers through Xiamen port, then follows a North Pacific corridor with no canal or chokepoint; at the far end is the port of Nanaimo.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Xiamen → Nanaimo shipments get held up: 6 points

Listed from loading in Xiamen to import into Canada, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

The Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon starts at the port

Ships leaving Xiamen enter the Taiwan Strait straight away. A Chinese government weather account notes that the strait's funnel effect makes winds 1–2 Beaufort levels stronger than outside it, and that the winter and spring north-east monsoon brings force 7 or stronger winds on about two-thirds of days. Container ships are advised to secure lashing.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Origin port

Xiamen ESS on multipurpose vessels and class 9 berths

Xiamen's energy-storage transport guide 2.0 (August 2026) notes that some ESS containers sail on multipurpose ships and calls for a pre-voyage meeting with the terminal and lashing contractors. It names the terminals qualified for class 9: Xiamen Hyundai terminal, Yuanhai Tongda, and Haixiang berths 7–8.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm early whether the carrier offers container-ship or multipurpose carriage, which qualified terminal is used, and who attends the pre-voyage meeting.

  3. Sea corridor

    Winter storms with hurricane-force winds

NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center found hurricane-force winds (64 knots and above) in North Pacific mid-latitude storms in every month from October to April, peaking in December, with 15 to 23 such storms per season in its 2001–2004 records. They are not typhoons, so they do not follow the tropical calendar.

What Anxin does: For October–April sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing and confirm the full DG data are on the manifest.

  4. Import country

Release before payment needs security posted in CARM

Since the CARM transition ended on 20 May 2025, importers without financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal no longer get release prior to payment; they pay duties and taxes when the goods are released. For a first shipment through Nanaimo, that decides whether goods can leave the terminal before the duty is settled.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

  5. Import country

British Columbia's new battery-product EPR category

British Columbia's 2025 recycling amendments bring products that contain or use batteries of 5 kg or less, portable power stations and separately sold replacement batteries under producer responsibility. Producers must file an EPR plan by 15 December 2026 and run the program from 1 October 2027.

What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Nanaimo, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

  6. Import country

IMDG papers work on the road leg, with Canadian conditions

TDG Regulations s. 9.3 let an international consignment move by road to or from Nanaimo under IMDG classification, marks, labels and documents. The shipping document must still be legible in English or French and show a 24-hour telephone number, and a container must carry placards under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Xiamen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Nanaimo.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

Yes. Xiamen MSA reported 104 ESS containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston in June 2026. Xiamen's ESS guide 2.0 requires a pre-voyage meeting and use of a class 9 qualified terminal.
