Lithium batteries for Digby go through Xiamen, the port for more than 90% of Fujian's lithium battery exports. On the way they face a Pacific crossing and a Panama Canal transit, and they arrive at the port of Digby.

Canada adds an eManifest that closes 24 hours before loading and a CARM account that decides whether goods are released before duty is paid. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Xiamen export
  • Online packaging appraisal
  • CARM account

Route profile

The Xiamen → Digby route in brief

Sea corridor

Asia – Americas via the Panama Canal

A Pacific crossing, a Panama Canal transit that depends on lake levels, and a Caribbean passage in hurricane season.

Import country

Canada

Container data due 24 hours before loading, CARM security for release before payment, and a road leg that accepts IMDG papers under Canadian conditions.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Xiamen → Digby shipments get held up: 5 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Digby and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

The Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon starts at the port

Ships leaving Xiamen enter the Taiwan Strait straight away. A Chinese government weather account notes that the strait's funnel effect makes winds 1–2 Beaufort levels stronger than outside it, and that the winter and spring north-east monsoon brings force 7 or stronger winds on about two-thirds of days. Container ships are advised to secure lashing.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Origin port

Xiamen MSA's 'one ship, one plan' for large battery cargo

Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting at which ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to sailing. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston on a multipurpose ship.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  3. Sea corridor

Panama's draft limit depends on the lake

The Panama Canal Authority sets the maximum draft in the Neopanamax locks according to Gatun Lake levels. In September 2026 it postponed a planned cut from 14.63 m to 14.48 m that was due on 1 October (advisory A-33-2026). A lower limit means ships transiting the new locks can load less.

What Anxin does: We check the canal advisory in force when we quote for Digby and ask carriers to confirm that the booked vessel's routing and any canal surcharge will not change before sailing.

  4. Import country

A late eManifest correction restarts the 24-hour clock

Canada's advance commercial information rules want container data from the carrier 24 hours before loading abroad. Change the data electronically before the ship sails and the 24 hours run again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, which is how a correction made in Xiamen can cost a container its sailing.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Xiamen and avoid amendments after the filing.

  5. Import country

English and French on consumer labels

Canada's consumer packaging rules require most mandatory label information on prepackaged consumer products in both English and French. Only the dealer's name and address may be in one language, and imported goods that do not state their origin need 'imported by / importé par' before it.

What Anxin does: For retail-packed goods going to Digby, we check the carton and retail-box artwork for the bilingual text before production is packed.

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Xiamen filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Xiamen → Digby: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
