This route runs through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay, then follows a long voyage ending in the North Atlantic or the Gulf of St Lawrence; at the far end is the port of Chicago.
The US side starts with two filings due before loading and ends with a road leg that must carry a live emergency number. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.
US entry hinges on filings made in China (ISF and AMS), a traceable lithium supply chain and a road leg that is regulated as a hazmat move.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Chicago and the United States import file.
Export dangerous-goods packaging must pass use appraisal in China before the goods can leave. Tianjin port's 2025 measures shortened appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group handles lithium DG containers, but without the appraisal certificate the rest of the filing cannot proceed.
What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.
Services to Chicago run either via Panama, where the Neopanamax draft depends on Gatun Lake (a planned cut was postponed in September 2026), or via Suez and the Mediterranean, where Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing the service uses and quote the options separately.
Battery containers held for DG checks or paperwork can run up demurrage and detention at Chicago. Under the FMC's billing rule, in force since May 2024, carriers and terminals must invoice within 30 days with accurate, complete information, or the charge is not payable, and the billed party has at least 30 days to ask for a waiver or refund. A 2025 court ruling set aside only the section on who may be billed.
What Anxin does: We keep the dates of discharge, availability and any DG hold for each container, so the importer can check invoices against them and dispute charges inside the FMC time limits.
Since 1 January 2026 producers selling covered batteries, or products containing them, in or into Illinois must take part in an approved battery stewardship plan through a stewardship organization, and no one may sell them in the state otherwise (Public Act 103-1033).
What Anxin does: For batteries arriving in Chicago for sale in Illinois, we ask the importer which stewardship organization the producer belongs to before the goods ship.
US customs rules give an unentered container 15 calendar days at the place of unlading. After that the carrier hands it to a bonded general order warehouse, with transport and storage at the consignee's risk and expense, and for DG cargo that needs specialized storage the port director decides where it is kept (19 CFR 4.37).
What Anxin does: We check with the importer's broker that the entry can be filed before arrival at Chicago, and chase any missing invoice or HTS detail while the ship is still at sea.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the United States import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions
Yes, if the container moves on a public highway. The IMDG waiver in 49 CFR 171.25(d)(2) only covers cargo that stays on the ship or moves between vessels; otherwise 49 CFR 172.604 requires a monitored number answered by someone with the emergency information. Goods shipped as 'Battery powered equipment' are exempt.
NOAA's storm study found hurricane-force winter storms from October to April, most often in January.
Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
