Lithium batteries for Augusta (Georgia) go from North China through Tianjin Xingang. On the way they face a Panama Canal corridor whose draft limit depends on Gatun Lake, and they arrive at the port of Augusta (Georgia).

Augusta (Georgia) means US customs filings that are due while the container is still in Tianjin, and a supply chain CBP may ask to see. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Factory-supervised loading
  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • ISF filer
  • Supply-chain tracing file

Route profile

How Tianjin → Augusta (Georgia) differs from other lanes

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Sea corridor

Asia – Americas via the Panama Canal

Gatun Lake levels set how much a ship can load through Panama; the Caribbean leg then crosses hurricane waters from June to November.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Tianjin → Augusta (Georgia) route

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Augusta (Georgia) and the United States market.

  1. Origin port

A slow document review at Tianjin can mean a missed vessel

Tianjin MSA itself said in July 2026 that, under the traditional review model, long document reviews often made firms miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port to be re-allocated to another ship. Its new fast-track green channel (appointment-based, more than 50% faster, with a fixed document list) is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not assume they qualify.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Sea corridor

The Pacific leg before Panama in winter

The first half of the voyage crosses the North Pacific, where NOAA has recorded hurricane-force mid-latitude storms from October to April, most often in December.

What Anxin does: For October–April sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing.

  3. Import country

CPSC eFiling for certified consumer products

Consumer products that need a CPSC certificate have had their certificate data filed electronically at entry since 8 July 2026 (goods from a Foreign Trade Zone from 8 January 2027). A battery-powered product falls under it through the product's own rules, which the importer should settle before the goods reach Augusta (Georgia).

What Anxin does: We ask whether the goods are consumer products that need a CPSC certificate and, if so, who files it, so that the question is settled before the goods arrive.

  4. Import country

The emergency response number has to be answered live

US rules want a numeric emergency response telephone number on the shipping paper for battery cargo that leaves Augusta (Georgia) by road, monitored for as long as the goods are in transport and answered by a person with the emergency information for UN3480 or UN3090. A call-back service fails the test (49 CFR 172.604); only the IMDG waiver for cargo that never touches a public highway avoids it.

What Anxin does: Before sailing we confirm who provides the 24-hour number for the US leg, usually the importer's emergency response provider, and put it with the contract reference on the DG documents we send to the trucker.

  5. Import country

'China' has to be marked on each article or its container

19 CFR 134.11 requires every imported article, or its container, to carry the English name of the country of origin in a conspicuous place, as legibly, indelibly and permanently as the article allows, at the time it is imported. Batteries and battery products reaching Augusta (Georgia) without it can be held until they are marked.

What Anxin does: We check product and carton photos for a durable 'Made in China' marking before stuffing in Tianjin, rather than leaving it for re-marking in a US warehouse.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Tianjin → Augusta (Georgia)

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Tianjin end

  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • 'Made in China' marking on articles or containers checked on photos

Carrier and voyage

  • Canal routing and any canal-related surcharge confirmed for the booked vessel
  • SP188 cartons: US 'forbidden aboard passenger aircraft' marking or CAO label
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

For import into United States

  • CPSC certificate data and eFiling arrangement, if the product is subject to certification
  • Importer of record and the licensed customs broker who will file the entry
  • ISF filer named; stuffing location and consolidator sent right after packing

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Tianjin filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United States before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Augusta (Georgia).

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Tianjin → Augusta (Georgia): questions we are asked

For lithium-ion batteries classified in HTSUS 8507.60.0020 and entered from 1 January 2026, USTR set the Section 301 additional duty at 25%; EV traction batteries in 8507.60.0010 have been at 25% since 2024. Other duties can apply on top. The importer's customs broker confirms the classification and total duty; we make sure the invoice gives the broker enough detail to do so.

It can. In September 2026 the Panama Canal Authority postponed a planned draft cut in the Neopanamax locks because of Gatun Lake levels (advisory A-33-2026). We check the advisory in force when quoting.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
