Lithium batteries for Ipswich go through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay. On the way they face a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and they arrive at the port of Ipswich.

The UK side asks for an S&S GB declaration, a battery producer registration and harbour notice. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Route profile

What sets Tianjin → Ipswich apart

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Tianjin to Ipswich

They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Ipswich and the United Kingdom import file.

  1. Origin port

Document review time at Tianjin and the cut-off

In July 2026 Tianjin MSA acknowledged that long document reviews under its traditional model often caused firms to miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port for another ship. The new appointment-based green channel, more than 50% faster with a fixed document list, is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not count on it.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Sea corridor

    Container losses off South Africa

Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  3. Import country

Customs declaration through CDS with a GB EORI

Import clearance at Ipswich runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service; CHIEF is no longer an option. A GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription are prerequisites, and subscription can take up to 5 working days when HMRC makes extra checks.

What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

  4. Import country

Bin symbol and capacity label under the 2008 regulations

Great Britain still labels batteries under the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008: a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol of a set minimum size on every battery, moved to the packaging only when the battery is too small or cannot practically be marked, and a capacity in mAh or Ah on portable rechargeables and on the front of their packaging.

What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Tianjin, because relabelling after discharge at Ipswich means opening dangerous goods packages.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead under UK rules

Batteries sold in the UK may contain no more than 0.0005 % mercury and 0.002 % cadmium by weight, subject to listed exceptions, and those above 0.004 % lead need the Pb symbol beneath the bin symbol. The Office for Product Safety and Standards enforces the rules.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for a substance statement covering mercury, cadmium and lead and file it with the shipment documents for the UK importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Tianjin to Ipswich

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Tianjin, before the box is loaded

  • Crossed-out bin symbol and mAh/Ah capacity label checked on battery and packaging photos
  • Substance statement for mercury, cadmium and lead from the manufacturer
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into United Kingdom

  • Importer's GB or XI EORI and CDS subscription confirmed; declarant named
  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Tianjin filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Ipswich.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Ipswich route

At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
