This route runs from North China through Tianjin Xingang, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is the port of Hartlepool.
Great Britain runs its own post-Brexit pre-filing and battery producer rules. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.
UK producer registration, a compliance scheme for portable batteries above 1 tonne a year, and import clearance through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Hartlepool and the United Kingdom import file.
Export dangerous-goods packaging must pass use appraisal in China before the goods can leave. Tianjin port's 2025 measures shortened appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group handles lithium DG containers, but without the appraisal certificate the rest of the filing cannot proceed.
What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Hartlepool decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.
What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Tianjin cut-off.
For the British market the marking reference is the 2008 placing-on-the-market regulations: every battery carries the crossed-out bin, sized to its surface area, and rechargeable portable batteries state their capacity on the cell or pack and on the packaging front. Small or embedded batteries move the symbol to the packaging.
What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Tianjin, because relabelling after discharge at Hartlepool means opening dangerous goods packages.
Once the box is off the quay at Hartlepool, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Hartlepool matches what left Tianjin.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Entry summary not lodged and the box rolls | Loading port, Tianjin | Filer and data settled at booking | Bill-of-lading issuer |
| Batteries arrive without the bin symbol or capacity marking | Importer in the UK | Photos checked against the UK marking list before loading | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or agent needs a GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription; HMRC grants access within 2 hours or up to 5 working days.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
