This route runs through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is the port of Grimsby.
British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.
An EORI starting with GB or XI and a CDS subscription for customs, annual tonnage and chemistry reporting through the NPWD, and take-back duties for distributors above 32 kg a year.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Tianjin to import into United Kingdom, each with what we do about it.
Every winter the Bohai Sea ices over, and the Haihe estuary at Tianjin is one of the harder-hit areas. For 2021/22 the national marine forecast centre put the peak ice period between mid-January and mid-February, with floating ice about 5 nautical miles out in Bohai Bay. Ice and cold slow port work just as the Chinese New Year peak arrives.
What Anxin does: For January and February sailings from Tianjin we add slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and confirm the vessel's berthing window with the carrier the week before loading.
Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
Under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, dangerous goods may not enter a British harbour area unless the harbour master has had notice at least 24 hours (and at most six months) in advance, or has agreed a shorter period. UN numbers, names and quantities are part of that notice, so the vessel's report is only as good as the booking data.
What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.
Great Britain still labels batteries under the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008: a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol of a set minimum size on every battery, moved to the packaging only when the battery is too small or cannot practically be marked, and a capacity in mAh or Ah on portable rechargeables and on the front of their packaging.
What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Tianjin, because relabelling after discharge at Grimsby means opening dangerous goods packages.
Import clearance at Grimsby runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service; CHIEF is no longer an option. A GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription are prerequisites, and subscription can take up to 5 working days when HMRC makes extra checks.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Tianjin export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ice or cold spell slows berthing in mid-winter | Bohai Bay, Jan–Feb | Slack between stuffing and cut-off; berthing window reconfirmed | Carrier, monitored by Anxin |
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Harbour notice late or wrong | Grimsby harbour area | DG data frozen before departure | Carrier / agent |
| Batteries arrive without the bin symbol or capacity marking | Importer in the UK | Photos checked against the UK marking list before loading | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.

We check carrier acceptance for Tianjin → Grimsby before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
