Lithium batteries for Istanbul (Haydarpasa) go out of Tianjin's Xingang terminals, where customs can supervise stuffing at the factory and the box goes straight to the ship on a booked slot. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Istanbul (Haydarpasa).

Türkiye checks battery imports through TAREKS before the customs declaration is registered. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Factory-supervised loading
  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • Özet beyan 24 h before loading
  • TAP membership + Çevre Uyum İzni
  • TAREKS application

Route profile

How Tianjin → Istanbul (Haydarpasa) differs from other lanes

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Import country

Türkiye

The Turkish entry summary is due before loading in China, and the importer's TAP, TAREKS and GEKAP duties come before sale.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Tianjin to Istanbul (Haydarpasa)

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Istanbul (Haydarpasa) and the Turkey market.

  1. Origin port

Document review time at Tianjin and the cut-off

In July 2026 Tianjin MSA acknowledged that long document reviews under its traditional model often caused firms to miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port for another ship. The new appointment-based green channel, more than 50% faster with a fixed document list, is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not count on it.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Origin port

Packaging appraisal comes first, even with Tianjin's quicker release

China requires use appraisal of export dangerous-goods packaging before the goods may be exported. Tianjin port's 2025 facilitation measures shortened packaging appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group provides port services for lithium DG containers, but the appraisal certificate is still a precondition for the rest of the filing.

What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.

  3. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Istanbul (Haydarpasa)

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Istanbul (Haydarpasa) most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Istanbul (Haydarpasa) uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  4. Import country

Turkish entry summary 24 hours before loading in Tianjin

Türkiye applies its own advance filing: for containerised sea cargo the entry summary declaration (özet beyan) must reach the customs office where the goods will be discharged at least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port. The carrier must make sure third-party filers meet the deadline, so incomplete data at Tianjin can keep the box off the ship.

What Anxin does: We give the carrier or filer the consignee details, HS-level description and DG data at booking, well before the Tianjin cut-off.

  5. Import country

    Collection-system membership before the permit

Türkiye links battery imports to waste collection: the importer joins TAP, with a board decision within 30 days, and only then requests the environmental compliance permit through TAREKS.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Turkish importer for its TAP membership and permit status, so a first-time importer starts the 30-day process before the goods leave Tianjin.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Tianjin → Istanbul (Haydarpasa)

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Tianjin end

  • Packaging use-appraisal certificate issued before the MSA cargo report is filed
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Invoice in triplicate with HS code and origin; certificate of origin without corrections
  • Battery type, quantity and weight per invoice line (for GEKAP)
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For import into Turkey

  • Importer's TAP membership and Çevre Uyum İzni (TAREKS)
  • Declaration of conformity and test reports for the TAREKS inspection

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Tianjin filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Turkey before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Istanbul (Haydarpasa).

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Tianjin to Istanbul (Haydarpasa)

Membership of TAP (or its system), decided within 30 days, and then an environmental compliance permit applied for through TAREKS; GEKAP is also payable on batteries placed on the market.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
