This route runs from North China through Tianjin Xingang, then follows a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean; at the far end is a port whose dangerous goods authorisations expire and must be renewed by the consignee.

Spain wants the producer on the RII-PYA register, with its number on the invoice. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • Spanish-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

How Tianjin → Barcelona differs from other lanes

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Destination port

Barcelona

A dangerous goods authorisation from the Port Authority and Capitanía Marítima before a class 9 box can be collected, valid only for its stated period.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Tianjin → Barcelona shipments get held up: 6 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Barcelona and the Spain market.

  1. Origin port

At Tianjin the port slot is booked before the truck leaves the factory

Tianjin Customs runs a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model for dangerous goods: officers oversee stuffing at the factory, the declaration goes in early through the single window, and the container enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform and goes straight to the ship. Any inspection happens in closed yards inside the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The time saved depends on the stuffing date, the slot and the declared data all matching.

What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Barcelona

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Barcelona most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Barcelona uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Destination port

A pickup authorisation from the Port Authority and Capitanía

To collect a dangerous-goods container in Barcelona, the consignee's agent needs a valid authorisation issued by the Port Authority together with the Capitanía Marítima, requested from the port's dangerous goods department. It states its validity and safety conditions, and an expired one has to be replaced before the truck can collect.

What Anxin does: We ask the Barcelona importer to have its agent request the authorisation before the ship arrives, and send the agent the DG declaration and packing list as soon as the vessel sails from Tianjin.

  4. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Spain for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Spain we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

  5. Import country

The truck leg out of Barcelona runs under ADR

Once the container leaves the terminal by road, ADR applies: Directive 2008/68/EC makes EU countries use it for domestic dangerous goods journeys as well as international ones. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E), so the haulier in Spain has to plan around category E tunnels, and damaged or defective batteries fall under special provision 376 and packing instructions P908 or P911 instead of P903.

What Anxin does: We give the Spain haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Tianjin.

  6. Import country

Due diligence on battery raw materials from August 2027

Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 pushed the Battery Regulation's due diligence duties for cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite back to 18 August 2027 and gave the Commission until 26 July 2026 for its guidelines. Buyers in Spain are already collecting the supply-chain information they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Spain buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Tianjin → Barcelona

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Tianjin, before the box is loaded

  • Stuffing date, port-entry slot and DG cut-off at Tianjin agreed in that order
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Battery quantity and chemistry listed separately for batteries in equipment

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)
  • Consignee EORI and HS-level description to the ENS filer before loading

For import into Spain

  • Dangerous goods pickup authorisation requested by the consignee's agent
  • RII-PYA registration number of the Spanish producer
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Tianjin filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Spain before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Barcelona.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Barcelona route

ADR, which the EU applies to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E).

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
