This route runs out of Tianjin's Xingang terminals, where customs can supervise stuffing at the factory and the box goes straight to the ship on a booked slot, then follows a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic; at the far end is a Baltic port where the harbour master sets conditions for handling each dangerous-goods cargo.

Poland expects the importer to hold a BDO register entry for batteries. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • National Single Window DG declaration

Route profile

What sets Tianjin → Gdansk apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Baltic via the Danish straits

The Baltic is reached only through the Danish straits, where deep-draught ships are advised to take pilots, and its northern ports set ice-class restrictions every winter.

Destination port

Gdańsk / Gdynia

Dangerous goods declared through Poland's National Single Window 24 hours before arrival, with the harbour master's consent and conditions for handling.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Tianjin to Gdansk

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Gdansk and the Poland market.

  1. Origin port

Winter ice at the Haihe mouth

Sea ice forms every winter in the Bohai Sea, and the Haihe estuary at Tianjin is among the severe areas. In winter 2021/22 China's national marine forecast centre expected the peak ice period from mid-January to mid-February, with floating ice reaching about 5 nautical miles out in Bohai Bay. Ice and cold spells slow port operations around the Chinese New Year shipping peak.

What Anxin does: For January and February sailings from Tianjin we add slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and confirm the vessel's berthing window with the carrier the week before loading.

  2. Origin port

A slow document review at Tianjin can mean a missed vessel

Tianjin MSA itself said in July 2026 that, under the traditional review model, long document reviews often made firms miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port to be re-allocated to another ship. Its new fast-track green channel (appointment-based, more than 50% faster, with a fixed document list) is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not assume they qualify.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  3. Sea corridor

EU emissions trading now covers the whole inbound voyage share

Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports, Gdansk included, are in the EU Emissions Trading System: 50% of the emissions of a voyage from China are covered, and the share of emissions for which lines must surrender allowances rises from 70% (for 2025 emissions) to 100% from 2027. Carriers can pass that cost on as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  4. Destination port

National Single Window declaration and the harbour master's conditions

In the ports supervised by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, the dangerous goods on an arriving ship are declared through the National Single Window at least 24 hours ahead, or on departure from the previous port on a short leg, which is common for Baltic feeders. The harbour master then gives consent and sets conditions for entry and handling.

What Anxin does: Because most Chinese cargo reaches Gdansk by feeder, we check the DG data are final before the mainline ship leaves Tianjin, so the feeder's declaration is not built on a draft.

  5. Import country

Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Poland: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Poland importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  6. Import country

    Substance limits for portable batteries

For portable batteries, Annex I sets maximum levels of 0.0005 % mercury, 0.002 % cadmium and 0.01 % lead by weight, the lead limit applying since 18 August 2024. The importer in Poland may be asked by market surveillance to demonstrate compliance.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Poland importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Tianjin → Gdansk

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Tianjin, before the box is loaded

  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the shipping line

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the Poland end

  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Haulier in Poland briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg
  • BDO registration number of the Polish importer

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Tianjin export filings, the carrier booking and the Poland import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Gdansk route

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Gdansk. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
