Lithium batteries for Ashdod go through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at a port where ships carrying hazardous materials need prior approval and a HAZMAT list 48 hours ahead.

On the Israeli side the tariff classification decides which import permits and standards apply. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Factory-supervised loading
  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • HAZMAT list 48 h before arrival (Ashdod)
  • Importer declaration and product file
  • Hebrew label artwork

Route profile

The Tianjin → Ashdod route in brief

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Destination port

Ashdod

Prior approval for ships carrying hazardous materials and a full HAZMAT list 48 hours before arrival, under a temporary procedure in force until further notice.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Tianjin to Ashdod

They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Ashdod and the Israel import file.

  1. Origin port

Document review time at Tianjin and the cut-off

In July 2026 Tianjin MSA acknowledged that long document reviews under its traditional model often caused firms to miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port for another ship. The new appointment-based green channel, more than 50% faster with a fixed document list, is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not count on it.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Origin port

Tianjin's supervised factory loading and port slots

Under Tianjin Customs' 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model, officers supervise stuffing at the factory, the declaration is lodged early through the single window, and the box enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform before going straight to the ship; inspections take place in closed yards at the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The gain holds only if stuffing date, slot and declared data agree.

What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.

  3. Sea corridor

The canal is open; the risk sits further south

The JMIC's September 2026 update put the northern Red Sea and the Suez Canal at MODERATE, with two-way transits and container lines selectively returning, and the Eastern Mediterranean at LOW. On this corridor the exposure lies at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, not at the canal itself.

What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.

  4. Destination port

Ship approval and a HAZMAT list 48 hours ahead

Under a temporary procedure Ashdod Port issued on 13 June 2025, to apply until further notice, any vessel carrying hazardous materials needs prior approval from Israel's Administration of Shipping and Ports, and ships with classes 1, 2.1 or 2.3 are kept out. Agents must send a full HAZMAT list, split into import, export and transit, 48 hours before arrival, or the ship's entry may be delayed.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier whether the procedure is still in force for its call at Ashdod, and give it the class 9 details at booking so they are in the 48-hour HAZMAT list.

  5. Import country

EU conformity accepted, but the importer declares it

Since January 2025 Israel's 'What's Good for Europe is Good for Israel' reform lets many products in on the basis of the adopted EU regulation. The importer files a declaration, adds an EU declaration of conformity or proof of lawful EU marketing for higher-risk groups, and keeps a product file. Batteries made only for the Chinese market have no EU paperwork to lean on.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer in Tianjin for the EU declaration of conformity and test reports behind it, and pass them to the Israeli importer for its declaration and product file.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Tianjin to Ashdod

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Tianjin, before the box is loaded

  • Stuffing date, port-entry slot and DG cut-off at Tianjin agreed in that order
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • EU declaration of conformity and test reports from the manufacturer
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For the importer in Israel

  • Importer declaration and product file under the European reform
  • Hebrew label text and where it will be applied
  • Israeli tariff code confirmed (pre-ruling if needed)

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the Israel import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Ashdod route

Under the temporary procedure issued in June 2025, ships with hazardous materials need prior approval, classes 1, 2.1 and 2.3 are excluded, and agents send a HAZMAT list 48 hours before arrival.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
