Lithium batteries for Vassiliko Bay go through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Vassiliko Bay.

The Cyprus side follows the EU battery and customs pre-filing rules. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Factory-supervised loading
  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • National producer registration

Route profile

How Tianjin → Vassiliko Bay differs from other lanes

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Tianjin → Vassiliko Bay shipments get held up: 5 points

Listed from loading in Tianjin to import into Cyprus, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Document review time at Tianjin and the cut-off

In July 2026 Tianjin MSA acknowledged that long document reviews under its traditional model often caused firms to miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port for another ship. The new appointment-based green channel, more than 50% faster with a fixed document list, is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not count on it.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Vassiliko Bay

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Vassiliko Bay most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Vassiliko Bay uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

Annex V testing for stationary energy storage

Stationary battery energy storage systems placed on the EU market since 18 August 2024 must be safe in normal operation, with technical documentation showing tests against the Annex V parameters, including thermal shock, short-circuit protection, over-discharge and thermal propagation. ESS buyers in Cyprus increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Cyprus we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

  4. Import country

A producer registration in Cyprus before the first sale

Registration under the Battery Regulation is Member State by Member State. The first company to make the batteries available in Cyprus has to appear in the national register, which can take up to 12 weeks after a complete file, and a non-resident brand must work through an authorised representative there.

What Anxin does: At booking we ask which company is the producer of record in Cyprus and for its registration number there, so a missing registration surfaces while the goods are still in Tianjin rather than after discharge in Vassiliko Bay.

  5. Import country

    Substance limits for portable batteries

For portable batteries, Annex I sets maximum levels of 0.0005 % mercury, 0.002 % cadmium and 0.01 % lead by weight, the lead limit applying since 18 August 2024. The importer in Cyprus may be asked by market surveillance to demonstrate compliance.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Cyprus importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Tianjin → Vassiliko Bay

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Tianjin end

  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For the importer in Cyprus

  • Producer of record in Cyprus and its national registration number

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the Cyprus import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Tianjin → Vassiliko Bay: questions we are asked

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Vassiliko Bay. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
