Lithium batteries for Port Alberni go from North China through Tianjin Xingang. On the way they face the open North Pacific, where weather is the main risk, and they arrive at the port of Port Alberni.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • Bilingual labels
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account

Route profile

What sets Tianjin → Port Alberni apart

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Import country

Canada

An eManifest filed 24 hours before loading, release-before-payment only with CARM security, and TDG conditions on the truck leg.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Tianjin to Port Alberni

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Port Alberni and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

Tianjin's supervised factory loading and port slots

Under Tianjin Customs' 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model, officers supervise stuffing at the factory, the declaration is lodged early through the single window, and the box enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform before going straight to the ship; inspections take place in closed yards at the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The gain holds only if stuffing date, slot and declared data agree.

What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.

  2. Origin port

Ice at the Haihe estuary in winter

Every winter the Bohai Sea ices over, and the Haihe estuary at Tianjin is one of the harder-hit areas. For 2021/22 the national marine forecast centre put the peak ice period between mid-January and mid-February, with floating ice about 5 nautical miles out in Bohai Bay. Ice and cold slow port work just as the Chinese New Year peak arrives.

What Anxin does: For January and February sailings from Tianjin we add slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and confirm the vessel's berthing window with the carrier the week before loading.

  3. Sea corridor

An open-ocean crossing where weather is the main risk

From Tianjin the drawn corridor to Port Alberni runs across the North Pacific without a canal or Red Sea passage, so weather replaces chokepoints as the risk. The ONE Apus, bound from Yantian to Long Beach in November 2020, had a stack collapse in a storm about 1,600 nautical miles north-west of Hawaii; her owners said more than 1,900 containers could be lost or damaged, up to 40 of them hazmat.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings especially, we review blocking and bracing on stuffing photos against the CINS points before sealing, and make sure the DG declaration is complete, so a damaged box can be identified and handled correctly.

  4. Import country

British Columbia's new battery-product EPR category

British Columbia's 2025 recycling amendments bring products that contain or use batteries of 5 kg or less, portable power stations and separately sold replacement batteries under producer responsibility. Producers must file an EPR plan by 15 December 2026 and run the program from 1 October 2027.

What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Port Alberni, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

  5. Import country

eManifest: cargo data 24 hours before loading in Tianjin

The CBSA requires marine carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data for containers at least 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, including the estimated loading time. If the data are amended electronically before departure, the 24-hour count starts again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, so a late correction can push a box for Port Alberni off its vessel.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Tianjin and avoid amendments after the filing.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Tianjin to Port Alberni

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Tianjin end

  • Stuffing date, port-entry slot and DG cut-off at Tianjin agreed in that order
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing

Carrier and voyage

  • Stuffing photos before, during and after packing, checked for blocking and bracing
  • Final cargo data with the carrier before the eManifest cut-off; no amendments after filing
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

At the Canada end

  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed
  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Tianjin export filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Tianjin → Port Alberni: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
