From Tianjin to Nanaimo, cargo moves out of Tianjin's Xingang terminals, crosses a great-circle crossing of the North Pacific, and is discharged at the port of Nanaimo.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • Factory-supervised loading
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account
  • Bilingual labels

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Tianjin → Nanaimo route

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Nanaimo and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

Packaging appraisal is still the first step at Tianjin

Export dangerous-goods packaging must pass use appraisal in China before the goods can leave. Tianjin port's 2025 measures shortened appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group handles lithium DG containers, but without the appraisal certificate the rest of the filing cannot proceed.

What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.

  2. Origin port

A slow document review at Tianjin can mean a missed vessel

Tianjin MSA itself said in July 2026 that, under the traditional review model, long document reviews often made firms miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port to be re-allocated to another ship. Its new fast-track green channel (appointment-based, more than 50% faster, with a fixed document list) is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not assume they qualify.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  3. Sea corridor

No chokepoint, but North Pacific storms

The drawn corridor from Tianjin crosses the North Pacific, with no canal and no Red Sea exposure. Weather is the risk instead. In November 2020 the ONE Apus, sailing from Yantian to Long Beach, suffered a stack collapse in a storm about 1,600 nautical miles north-west of Hawaii; its owners reported that more than 1,900 containers could be lost or damaged, including up to 40 hazmat boxes.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings especially, we review blocking and bracing on stuffing photos against the CINS points before sealing, and make sure the DG declaration is complete, so a damaged box can be identified and handled correctly.

  4. Import country

CARM: no posted security, no release before payment

The CBSA's CARM transition ended in May 2025. Importer accounts with dutiable goods that had not posted financial security were removed from release prior to payment, and they now pay duties and taxes at release. An importer new to Nanaimo has to settle this before the first container lands.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

  5. Import country

A late eManifest correction restarts the 24-hour clock

Canada's advance commercial information rules want container data from the carrier 24 hours before loading abroad. Change the data electronically before the ship sails and the 24 hours run again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, which is how a correction made in Tianjin can cost a container its sailing.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Tianjin and avoid amendments after the filing.

  6. Import country

BC producers need an EPR plan by December 2026

Battery-containing products, portable power stations and replacement batteries sold in British Columbia fall under a new EPR category: plans are due by 15 December 2026 and programs must operate by 1 October 2027. For goods landed at Nanaimo, whoever counts as the producer has to be ready.

What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Nanaimo, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Tianjin to Nanaimo

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Tianjin end

  • Packaging use-appraisal certificate issued before the MSA cargo report is filed
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

Carrier and voyage

  • Stuffing photos before, during and after packing, checked for blocking and bracing
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into Canada

  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed
  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Tianjin filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Nanaimo.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Nanaimo route

Only if the importer is enrolled in release prior to payment with financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal. Since 20 May 2025, importers without security pay duties and taxes at release.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
