Lithium batteries for Ghent go from North China through Tianjin Xingang. On the way they face a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and they arrive at the port of Ghent.
Belgium expects the importer to be covered by Bebat or an approved individual plan. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.
Bebat membership or a regionally approved individual plan, an authorised representative for sellers without a Belgian base, and the EU-wide battery and ICS2 duties.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Ghent and the Belgium import file.
Tianjin MSA itself said in July 2026 that, under the traditional review model, long document reviews often made firms miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port to be re-allocated to another ship. Its new fast-track green channel (appointment-based, more than 50% faster, with a fixed document list) is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not assume they qualify.
What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.
Tianjin Customs runs a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model for dangerous goods: officers oversee stuffing at the factory, the declaration goes in early through the single window, and the container enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform and goes straight to the ship. Any inspection happens in closed yards inside the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The time saved depends on the stuffing date, the slot and the declared data all matching.
What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.
Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
The importer in Belgium carries the check: CE marking on the battery and an EU declaration of conformity, translated into the language Belgium asks for, have both been required since 18 August 2024 for batteries entering the EU market.
What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer in China for the declaration of conformity and a photo of the CE marking on the battery or its packaging before loading, and pass them to the Belgium importer. We check that the documents exist and match the goods; we do not assess conformity.
A battery entering Belgium has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Ghent.
What Anxin does: We pass the Belgium importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.
The Battery Regulation's due diligence obligations on cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite were postponed by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 and now apply from 18 August 2027, with Commission guidelines due by 26 July 2026. Buyers in Belgium are already asking suppliers for the supply-chain data they will need.
What Anxin does: We pass the Belgium buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the Belgium import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box sent to the terminal inspection yard because declared data do not match | Beijiang / Dongjiang terminals | Declaration, packing certificate and container number cross-checked before trucking | Anxin |
| Document review runs past the vessel cut-off; cargo re-allocated to a later ship | Tianjin MSA review | Complete document set filed days before cut-off | Anxin with the declarant |
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Declaration of conformity missing or not in the required language | Importer in Belgium | Declaration and CE photo collected before loading | Manufacturer / importer |
| Importer details missing from battery and packaging | Importer in Belgium | Address block sent to the factory before packing | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
Usually by joining Bebat through MyBebat. An individual plan needs approval from the regional authority and financial security, and sellers without a Belgian presence must appoint an authorised representative.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
