Lithium batteries for Khalifa Bin Salman Port go through Tianjin, with its Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals on the Bohai Bay. On the way they face a corridor across the Arabian Sea and, for Gulf ports, through Hormuz, and they arrive at a port where the MSDS and hazardous manifest must reach terminal planning 72 hours before the ship.

Bahrain wants the customs bill of entry in place before the goods are imported. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • MSDS to terminal planning 72 h before arrival
  • Licensed clearing agent in Bahrain

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Tianjin → Khalifa Bin Salman Port route

They run from the Tianjin terminal through the voyage to Khalifa Bin Salman Port and the Bahrain import file.

  1. Origin port

Document review time at Tianjin and the cut-off

In July 2026 Tianjin MSA acknowledged that long document reviews under its traditional model often caused firms to miss the vessel's document cut-off, leaving cargo in port for another ship. The new appointment-based green channel, more than 50% faster with a fixed document list, is for new-energy-vehicle cargo; battery shipments should not count on it.

What Anxin does: We submit the cargo report with the full document set (safe-carriage declaration, SDS, packing certificate, packaging certificate) days before the cut-off rather than on the day, and treat any MSA query as same-day work.

  2. Origin port

Tianjin's supervised factory loading and port slots

Under Tianjin Customs' 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model, officers supervise stuffing at the factory, the declaration is lodged early through the single window, and the box enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform before going straight to the ship; inspections take place in closed yards at the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The gain holds only if stuffing date, slot and declared data agree.

What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.

  3. Sea corridor

Hormuz rated SEVERE in September 2026

The JMIC rated the Strait of Hormuz SEVERE on 24 September 2026, with attacks considered highly likely; one attack on 21–23 September killed a crew member on the bulk carrier CAPE DAO. Traffic is well below the 2025 average of about 138 ships a day, and neutral ships face visit-and-search checks under the US blockade of Iranian ports. Every sailing to Khalifa Bin Salman Port passes through it.

What Anxin does: We ask each carrier whether it is currently calling at Khalifa Bin Salman Port, by which route and with what war-risk or emergency surcharge, and get that in writing before booking.

  4. Destination port

MSDS and manifest to terminal planning 72 hours out

APM Terminals Bahrain handles all hazardous classes at Khalifa Bin Salman Port, but the shipping agent must send the MSDS and cargo manifest for every hazardous container to its planning team at least 72 hours before the vessel arrives. Class 9 batteries do not need the government approvals required for classes such as 1 or 7, so the 72-hour paperwork is the gate.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the SDS for each battery type with the DG declaration at booking, so the agent has it well before the 72-hour point for Khalifa Bin Salman Port.

  5. Import country

A licensed clearing agent lodges the bill of entry

In Bahrain the customs bill of entry comes before the import, not after discharge, and the usual route is a registered, licensed clearing agent working to Bahrain Customs procedures.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which licensed clearing agent will lodge the bill of entry and send that agent the invoice, packing list and DG details as soon as the ship sails from Tianjin.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Tianjin to Khalifa Bin Salman Port

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Tianjin end

  • Stuffing date, port-entry slot and DG cut-off at Tianjin agreed in that order
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

Carrier and voyage

  • Carrier's current call pattern and war-risk surcharge for the Gulf port in writing
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For import into Bahrain

  • Licensed clearing agent named, with documents for the bill of entry

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the Bahrain import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Tianjin to Khalifa Bin Salman Port

The importer or its local agent completes the bill of entry before import; a registered, licensed clearing agent is recommended.

Traffic continues but at reduced levels: the JMIC rated Hormuz SEVERE on 24 September 2026, below the 2025 average of about 138 ships a day. We confirm each carrier's current call pattern and surcharges before booking.

The green channel Tianjin MSA announced in July 2026 is for new-energy-vehicle cargo. For battery containers we plan on the normal review and file early, because Tianjin MSA has said long reviews under the traditional model often cost firms their vessel cut-off.
