Lithium batteries for Columbus (Georgia) go from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou. On the way they face a corridor through the Panama Canal, and they arrive at the port of Columbus (Georgia).

Columbus (Georgia) means US customs filings that are due while the container is still in Shenzhen, and a supply chain CBP may ask to see. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • HTS code 8507.60
  • ISF filer
  • Supply-chain tracing file

Route profile

How Shenzhen → Columbus (Georgia) differs from other lanes

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Americas via the Panama Canal

A Panama Canal corridor whose Neopanamax draft depends on Gatun Lake levels, followed by the Caribbean during hurricane season.

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Shenzhen → Columbus (Georgia) route

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into United States, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Origin port

Dongguan's packaging certificate data is shared

Dongguan, home to more than 500 battery companies, supplies much of the cargo leaving Shenzhen. Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data, described as a first in China, and act jointly against concealed and false declarations; the one-box route to Yantian, 409 containers by then, relies on the same record.

What Anxin does: We compare the packaging certificate with the MSA cargo report (UN number, packaging code, number of packages) before either goes in, so the shared data shows no gap.

  3. Sea corridor

Gatun Lake sets the Neopanamax draft

How deep ships can load through Panama's new locks depends on Gatun Lake. In September 2026 the Canal Authority's advisory A-33-2026 postponed a cut in the Neopanamax draft from 14.63 m to 14.48 m that had been due on 1 October, citing lake levels; a lower limit reduces what a ship bound for Columbus (Georgia) can carry.

What Anxin does: We check the canal advisory in force when we quote for Columbus (Georgia) and ask carriers to confirm that the booked vessel's routing and any canal surcharge will not change before sailing.

  4. Import country

'China' has to be marked on each article or its container

19 CFR 134.11 requires every imported article, or its container, to carry the English name of the country of origin in a conspicuous place, as legibly, indelibly and permanently as the article allows, at the time it is imported. Batteries and battery products reaching Columbus (Georgia) without it can be held until they are marked.

What Anxin does: We check product and carton photos for a durable 'Made in China' marking before stuffing in Shenzhen, rather than leaving it for re-marking in a US warehouse.

  5. Import country

Button and coin cells: Reese's Law

Consumer products containing button or coin cells manufactured or imported after 19 March 2024 must meet the UL 4200A-2023 performance and warning-label rules adopted as 16 CFR part 1263, and battery packaging labels have been mandatory since 21 September 2024. The importer also needs a certificate citing the rule.

What Anxin does: When a shipment for Columbus (Georgia) includes products with button or coin cells, we ask for the certificate and photos of the battery compartment warnings before booking.

  6. Import country

The FMC's 30-day rules on demurrage and detention bills

If a battery container waits at Columbus (Georgia), the demurrage or detention invoice has to arrive within 30 days and carry accurate and sufficient information, or the charge is not owed (46 CFR part 541). The billed party then has at least 30 days to dispute it; in 2025 the D.C. Circuit struck down only the rule on who may be invoiced.

What Anxin does: We keep the dates of discharge, availability and any DG hold for each container, so the importer can check invoices against them and dispute charges inside the FMC time limits.

  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the shipping line

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Shenzhen filings, the carrier booking and the United States import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Columbus (Georgia) route

Yes, if the container moves on a public highway. The IMDG waiver in 49 CFR 171.25(d)(2) only covers cargo that stays on the ship or moves between vessels; otherwise 49 CFR 172.604 requires a monitored number answered by someone with the emergency information. Goods shipped as 'Battery powered equipment' are exempt.

It can. In September 2026 the Panama Canal Authority postponed a planned draft cut in the Neopanamax locks because of Gatun Lake levels (advisory A-33-2026). We check the advisory in force when quoting.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
