This route runs out of Shenzhen's Yantian and Shekou terminals, then follows the Pacific, the Panama Canal and the Caribbean; at the far end is the port of Cambridge (Maryland).

The US side adds a 25% Section 301 duty line, forced-labour scrutiny of lithium supply chains and an ISF deadline that falls before loading. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Supply-chain tracing file
  • HTS code 8507.60
  • ISF filer

The Shenzhen → Cambridge (Maryland) route in brief

Sea corridor

Asia – Americas via the Panama Canal

A Pacific crossing, a Panama Canal transit that depends on lake levels, and a Caribbean passage in hurricane season.

Import country

United States

A duty line set by the exact 8507.60 code, lithium supply-chain questions under UFLPA, and ISF and AMS filings that are due before the box is loaded.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Shenzhen → Cambridge (Maryland) shipments get held up: 5 points

They run from the Shenzhen terminal through the voyage to Cambridge (Maryland) and the United States import file.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

Panama's draft limit depends on the lake

The Panama Canal Authority sets the maximum draft in the Neopanamax locks according to Gatun Lake levels. In September 2026 it postponed a planned cut from 14.63 m to 14.48 m that was due on 1 October (advisory A-33-2026). A lower limit means ships transiting the new locks can load less.

What Anxin does: We check the canal advisory in force when we quote for Cambridge (Maryland) and ask carriers to confirm that the booked vessel's routing and any canal surcharge will not change before sailing.

  3. Import country

Day 15 at the terminal: the General Order deadline

US customs rules give an unentered container 15 calendar days at the place of unlading. After that the carrier hands it to a bonded general order warehouse, with transport and storage at the consignee's risk and expense, and for DG cargo that needs specialized storage the port director decides where it is kept (19 CFR 4.37).

What Anxin does: We check with the importer's broker that the entry can be filed before arrival at Cambridge (Maryland), and chase any missing invoice or HTS detail while the ship is still at sea.

  4. Import country

Where the lithium came from: UFLPA questions at entry

Since August 2025 lithium has been a high-priority sector under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, and CBP had by then stopped more than 16,700 shipments for UFLPA review. A container for Cambridge (Maryland) can be held while the importer shows where the cells, cathode material and lithium compounds were sourced.

What Anxin does: We tell the importer at quotation stage that supply-chain tracing may be requested, and keep manufacturer names and addresses consistent across invoice, packing list and ISF so the paper trail does not contradict itself.

  5. Import country

Product defects must be reported to CPSC within 24 hours

US importers, like manufacturers and retailers, must tell CPSC within 24 hours once they have information reasonably suggesting that a consumer product fails a safety rule or has a defect that could create a substantial hazard. Battery overheating reports from customers can trigger that duty, and CPSC expects any investigation to take no more than about 10 working days.

What Anxin does: We keep the manufacturer's batch records, UN 38.3 summaries and packing photos for each shipment to Cambridge (Maryland), so the importer can answer CPSC questions quickly.

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United States before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Cambridge (Maryland).

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shenzhen → Cambridge (Maryland): questions we are asked

No. The carrier must also send its cargo declaration through AMS 24 hours before loading, and CBP will not issue the permit to unlade without it.

1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
