This route runs from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Plymouth.

British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • S&S GB entry summary
  • English-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI

Route profile

How Shenzhen → Plymouth differs from other lanes

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Shenzhen → Plymouth route

They run from the Shenzhen terminal through the voyage to Plymouth and the United Kingdom import file.

  1. Origin port

    Typhoon season squeezes Shenzhen cut-offs

The Hong Kong Observatory puts the regional tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. DG containers need their MSA filings approved and a signed packing certificate before loading, so a closed gate or a rolled vessel in typhoon weeks can push the whole document chain to a new sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Plymouth decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Import country

Road haulage from Plymouth under the carriage regulations

The road leg out of Plymouth is regulated by the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009, which make ADR the rulebook for dangerous goods on British roads, with national derogations. UN 3480 moves as class 9, so the haulier needs the same package and UN details as the ocean declaration.

What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Plymouth matches what left Shenzhen.

  4. Import country

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading in Shenzhen

The UK's S&S GB service must hold the entry summary for a Plymouth container 24 hours before it is loaded in Shenzhen. Whoever issued the bill of lading answers for it, and a late booking rolls to a later vessel rather than being loaded unfiled.

What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Shenzhen cut-off.

  5. Import country

24 hours' written notice to the harbour master

The Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016 bar bringing dangerous goods into a British harbour area without notice to the harbour master at least 24 hours ahead (and no more than six months), unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period. The notice carries UN numbers, names and quantities, so the vessel's data depend on the booking.

What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Shenzhen to Plymouth

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Shenzhen, before the box is loaded

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Bill-of-lading issuer named and S&S GB data complete before loading
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

For the importer in United Kingdom

  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR
  • Battery weight and chemistry per shipment for the importer's NPWD return
  • Importer's GB or XI EORI and CDS subscription confirmed; declarant named

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Shenzhen filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Shenzhen to Plymouth

At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
