Lithium batteries for Ipswich go from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou. On the way they face a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and they arrive at the port of Ipswich.

Great Britain runs its own post-Brexit pre-filing and battery producer rules. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Ipswich apart

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Shenzhen and Ipswich: 6 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Ipswich and at customs in United Kingdom.

  1. Origin port

Inspected in Dongguan, loaded unopened at Yantian

A large share of Shenzhen's battery exports is stuffed inland and trucked to the quay. In a May 2026 cross-regional 'one-box' pilot, Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA jointly inspected four battery containers at a Dongguan factory and loaded them at Yantian without reopening them, which shows that the factory inspection record is what counts at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  3. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Ipswich decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  4. Import country

24 hours' written notice to the harbour master

The Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016 bar bringing dangerous goods into a British harbour area without notice to the harbour master at least 24 hours ahead (and no more than six months), unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period. The notice carries UN numbers, names and quantities, so the vessel's data depend on the booking.

What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.

  5. Import country

Annual battery returns through the NPWD

Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.

What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.

  6. Import country

Portable batteries: a compliance scheme by 15 October

A UK producer placing more than a tonne of portable batteries a year must be in a battery compliance scheme, joined by 15 October before the compliance year; the scheme registers and reports for it. Smaller producers register themselves on the NPWD and report their tonnage and chemistry by 31 January.

What Anxin does: We ask the UK importer whether it is a large or small portable producer and which scheme covers it, and put battery weights per chemistry on the packing list.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Ipswich.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Ipswich route

At least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is responsible, and a booking made within 24 hours of loading goes on a later vessel.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
