Route profile

The Shenzhen → Santa Cruz das Flores route in brief

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Shenzhen and Santa Cruz das Flores: 5 points

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into Portugal, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Typhoon season squeezes Shenzhen cut-offs

The Hong Kong Observatory puts the regional tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. DG containers need their MSA filings approved and a signed packing certificate before loading, so a closed gate or a rolled vessel in typhoon weeks can push the whole document chain to a new sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

    The round-Africa alternative

Services that avoid the Red Sea, 43% of the Mediterranean total, go round the Cape of Good Hope and re-enter through Gibraltar. SAMSA estimates that about 200 of the 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, 35% of the total, went overboard near the Cape.

What Anxin does: On Cape sailings we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  3. Import country

Supply-chain due diligence moved to August 2027

The Battery Regulation's due diligence obligations on cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite were postponed by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 and now apply from 18 August 2027, with Commission guidelines due by 26 July 2026. Buyers in Portugal are already asking suppliers for the supply-chain data they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Portugal buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

  4. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Portugal has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Santa Cruz das Flores.

What Anxin does: We pass the Portugal importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  5. Import country

    Substance limits for portable batteries

For portable batteries, Annex I sets maximum levels of 0.0005 % mercury, 0.002 % cadmium and 0.01 % lead by weight, the lead limit applying since 18 August 2024. The importer in Portugal may be asked by market surveillance to demonstrate compliance.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Portugal importer; we do not test batteries.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Portugal before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Santa Cruz das Flores.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Santa Cruz das Flores route

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Santa Cruz das Flores. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
