Lithium batteries for Mundra go from Dongguan and Shenzhen factories via Yantian, where the one-box route had moved 409 battery containers by September 2026. On the way they face the Indian Ocean monsoon corridor, and they arrive at the port of Mundra.

India adds BIS registration for lithium cells and batteries, checked online by customs. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Route profile

The Shenzhen → Mundra route in brief

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

What to watch between Shenzhen and Mundra: 6 points

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into India, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Inspected in Dongguan, loaded unopened at Yantian

A large share of Shenzhen's battery exports is stuffed inland and trucked to the quay. In a May 2026 cross-regional 'one-box' pilot, Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA jointly inspected four battery containers at a Dongguan factory and loaded them at Yantian without reopening them, which shows that the factory inspection record is what counts at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  3. Sea corridor

Theft at night in the Malacca and Singapore Straits

ReCAAP counted 21 armed-robbery incidents in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore in the first half of 2026, down 74% but still 60% of all Asian cases. They are mostly night-time thefts of engine spares from bulk carriers and barges; a container ship bound for Mundra is a less usual target but uses the same lanes.

What Anxin does: We keep the vessel and voyage on the booking record for Mundra, so a carrier incident or delay notice can be matched to the shipment straight away.

  4. Import country

Monsoon rain at Mundra from June

IMD puts the normal monsoon onset over Kerala at 1 June; in 2026 it came on 4 June and then spread north, reaching the whole country around mid-July. Battery cartons arriving at Mundra in this period need to stay dry through discharge and delivery.

What Anxin does: For monsoon-season arrivals at Mundra we ask for cartons with moisture protection and tell the consignee to plan unstuffing under cover.

  5. Import country

Customs check the registration online, model by model

Since CBIC Instruction 27/2025, customs officers at Mundra verify the BIS registration on crsbis.in, checking manufacturer, model and factory location. Goods under a deferred or cancelled registration are refused clearance, so an out-of-date certificate is enough to hold the container.

What Anxin does: We compare the model numbers and factory address on the invoice with the registration shown on crsbis.in before the goods leave Shenzhen.

  6. Import country

BIS registration for lithium cells and batteries

Lithium-ion cells and batteries are under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (IS 16046 Part 2). The manufacturer needs its own registration, and the R-number goes into the Bill of Entry at Mundra; batteries without it cannot be cleared.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask for the manufacturer's BIS R-number and check that it covers the models and factory named in the shipment.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Shenzhen → Mundra

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Before loading in Shenzhen

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • BIS R-number checked against model and factory on crsbis.in
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

For the shipping line

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for India before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Mundra.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Mundra route

They verify the registration on crsbis.in, including manufacturer, model and factory location, and refuse deferred or cancelled registrations.

Often, yes. Colombo is the main relay for Indian cargo, so we ask the carrier where the service relays and check that the feeder accepts the batteries too.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
