This route runs from Dongguan and Shenzhen factories via Yantian, where the one-box route had moved 409 battery containers by September 2026, then follows the Malacca Strait and then the Indian Ocean; at the far end is the port of Mumbai.

In India the BIS R-number must match the manufacturer, model and factory on crsbis.in. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • BIS CRS
  • CPCB EPR
  • Advance Bill of Entry

Route profile

The Shenzhen → Mumbai route in brief

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Indian Ocean

An Indian Ocean crossing whose season depends on the side: the southwest monsoon and two cyclone seasons in the north, a November–April cyclone season in the south-west, and piracy off Somalia.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Shenzhen to Mumbai

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into India, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Origin port

Factory stuffing in Dongguan, loading at Yantian: avoid a second opening

Much Shenzhen battery export is stuffed inland and trucked to the terminal. In May 2026 Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA ran a cross-regional 'one-box' pilot: four battery containers were inspected jointly at the Dongguan factory and loaded at Yantian without being opened again. It shows that the inspection record made at the factory is what matters at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  3. Sea corridor

Two cyclone seasons in the North Indian Ocean

The India Meteorological Department describes two cyclone seasons in the North Indian Ocean, April–May and October–December, the latter being the main one. Port closures and vessels waiting out a storm push the arrival at Mumbai back.

What Anxin does: For sailings in those months we plan delivery with slack at Mumbai and confirm the carrier's revised arrival before booking onward transport.

  4. Import country

Monsoon rain at Mumbai from June

IMD puts the normal monsoon onset over Kerala at 1 June; in 2026 it came on 4 June and then spread north, reaching the whole country around mid-July. Battery cartons arriving at Mumbai in this period need to stay dry through discharge and delivery.

What Anxin does: For monsoon-season arrivals at Mumbai we ask for cartons with moisture protection and tell the consignee to plan unstuffing under cover.

  5. Import country

Advance Bill of Entry: file before the ship arrives

Under Section 46 of the Customs Act, the Bill of Entry for Mumbai must be filed by the end of the day before arrival, and can go in 30 days ahead. Late filing means charges, so documents from Shenzhen need to reach the broker early.

What Anxin does: We send the importer's broker the invoice, packing list and BIS details as soon as the ship sails from Shenzhen, so the Bill of Entry can be filed early.

  6. Import country

Most Mumbai container traffic is not at Mumbai Port

Mumbai Port Authority's Indira Container Terminal ran at about one-third of capacity in July 2026, and the port is seeking to add only clean and non-hazardous cargo there because the terminal is close to the city. Battery DG boxes for Mumbai may in practice be routed through Nhava Sheva, so the discharge terminal should be confirmed.

What Anxin does: We confirm with the carrier which terminal the container for Mumbai will be discharged at and make sure the consignee's broker files for that customs station.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Shenzhen to Mumbai

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

In Shenzhen, before the box is loaded

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • BIS R-number checked against model and factory on crsbis.in

Carrier and voyage

  • Carrier's revised arrival reconfirmed in the cyclone season before booking onward transport
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For the importer in India

  • Documents with the broker in time for the advance Bill of Entry
  • Importer's CPCB producer registration

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for India before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Mumbai.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shenzhen → Mumbai: questions we are asked

Yes. They fall under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (IS 16046 Part 2), and the R-number is declared in the Bill of Entry.

The India Meteorological Department describes two North Indian Ocean seasons, April–May and October–December, the latter being the main one.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
