From Shenzhen to Vancouver, cargo moves from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou, crosses the open North Pacific, where weather is the main risk, and is discharged at the port of Vancouver.

Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • eManifest cut-off
  • CARM account
  • Bilingual labels

Route profile

How Shenzhen → Vancouver differs from other lanes

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Transpacific (North Pacific)

No canal or Red Sea passage, but a North Pacific crossing where winter storms have collapsed container stacks.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Shenzhen to Vancouver

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Vancouver and at customs in Canada.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

    Winter storms with hurricane-force winds

NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center found hurricane-force winds (64 knots and above) in North Pacific mid-latitude storms in every month from October to April, peaking in December, with 15 to 23 such storms per season in its 2001–2004 records. They are not typhoons, so they do not follow the tropical calendar.

What Anxin does: For October–April sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing and confirm the full DG data are on the manifest.

  3. Import country

Port of Vancouver: pre-notification and DG acceptance

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, with other agencies, requires pre-notification before dangerous goods move within the port. Applications for dangerous goods acceptance go through its Pacific Gateway Portal, and handling must follow the Canada Shipping Act and the TDG Act.

What Anxin does: We give the carrier and its agent the complete DG data for Vancouver early enough for the port authority's acceptance process, and pass the same data to the consignee's trucker.

  4. Import country

eManifest: cargo data 24 hours before loading in Shenzhen

The CBSA requires marine carriers to transmit cargo and conveyance data for containers at least 24 hours before loading at the foreign port, including the estimated loading time. If the data are amended electronically before departure, the 24-hour count starts again from the CBSA's acknowledgement, so a late correction can push a box for Vancouver off its vessel.

What Anxin does: We send the carrier the final cargo description, UN number, weights and consignee details before the cut-off in Shenzhen and avoid amendments after the filing.

  5. Import country

British Columbia's new battery-product EPR category

British Columbia's 2025 recycling amendments bring products that contain or use batteries of 5 kg or less, portable power stations and separately sold replacement batteries under producer responsibility. Producers must file an EPR plan by 15 December 2026 and run the program from 1 October 2027.

What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Vancouver, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Shenzhen to Vancouver

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

In Shenzhen, before the box is loaded

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

Carrier and voyage

  • Stuffing photos before, during and after packing, checked for blocking and bracing
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the Canada end

  • English DG documents with a 24-hour number for the Canadian road leg
  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Canada before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Vancouver.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Vancouver route

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
