This route runs out of Shenzhen's Yantian and Shekou terminals, then follows a long voyage ending in the North Atlantic or the Gulf of St Lawrence; at the far end is the port of St. John's.

On the Canadian side the carrier's eManifest is due before loading and the road leg follows TDG conditions. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • eManifest cut-off

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Shenzhen and St. John's: 5 points

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into Canada, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Factory stuffing in Dongguan, loading at Yantian: avoid a second opening

Much Shenzhen battery export is stuffed inland and trucked to the terminal. In May 2026 Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA ran a cross-regional 'one-box' pilot: four battery containers were inspected jointly at the Dongguan factory and loaded at Yantian without being opened again. It shows that the inspection record made at the factory is what matters at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Sea corridor

North Atlantic winter storms peak in January

NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center has recorded hurricane-force mid-latitude storms in the North Atlantic from October to April, most often in January. The final leg to St. John's crosses those waters.

What Anxin does: For winter sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing.

  3. Import country

Release before payment needs security posted in CARM

Since the CARM transition ended on 20 May 2025, importers without financial security posted in the CARM Client Portal no longer get release prior to payment; they pay duties and taxes when the goods are released. For a first shipment through St. John's, that decides whether goods can leave the terminal before the duty is settled.

What Anxin does: At quotation we ask the Canada importer whether its CARM account has security posted for release prior to payment, so the broker's release plan is known before the ship arrives.

  4. Import country

A 24-hour number and English or French documents for the Canadian road leg

Canada accepts IMDG marking and documentation for the truck move out of St. John's (TDG s. 9.3), provided the shipping document is legible in English or French, gives a 24-hour number and the container is placarded under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.

  5. Import country

Incidents must be reported within two days

Under s. 14 of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, an importer that learns of a health or safety incident involving a consumer product must tell Health Canada and its supplier within two days, and file a written report within ten. For battery products sold in Canada, the Chinese supplier's test and batch data are needed quickly.

What Anxin does: We make sure the importer has the manufacturer's contact, batch identifiers and test reports on file with each shipment, so an incident report can be made on time.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Shenzhen → St. John's

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Shenzhen

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Bilingual (English/French) retail labelling checked on artwork
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing

For the shipping line

  • Final cargo data with the carrier before the eManifest cut-off; no amendments after filing
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

For the importer in Canada

  • Importer's CARM account and release-prior-to-payment security confirmed

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Shenzhen export filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shenzhen → St. John's: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours before loading in China. If the data are amended electronically before the ship sails, the 24 hours restart from the CBSA's acknowledgement.

NOAA's storm study found hurricane-force winter storms from October to April, most often in January.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
