Transpacific (North Pacific)
No canal or Red Sea passage, but a North Pacific crossing where winter storms have collapsed container stacks.
North America · sea freight from Shenzhen
Shenzhen to Port Coquitlam
South China Sea · Taiwan Strait · East China Sea · Strait of Juan de Fuca
From Shenzhen to Port Coquitlam, cargo moves out of Shenzhen's Yantian and Shekou terminals, crosses a North Pacific corridor with no canal or chokepoint, and is discharged at the port of Port Coquitlam.
Canadian clearance depends on eManifest data filed before loading and on the importer's CARM set-up. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
No canal or Red Sea passage, but a North Pacific crossing where winter storms have collapsed container stacks.
Container data due 24 hours before loading, CARM security for release before payment, and a road leg that accepts IMDG papers under Canadian conditions.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Shenzhen terminal through the voyage to Port Coquitlam and the Canada import file.
Dongguan, home to more than 500 battery companies, supplies much of the cargo leaving Shenzhen. Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data, described as a first in China, and act jointly against concealed and false declarations; the one-box route to Yantian, 409 containers by then, relies on the same record.
What Anxin does: We compare the packaging certificate with the MSA cargo report (UN number, packaging code, number of packages) before either goes in, so the shared data shows no gap.
NOAA's Ocean Prediction Center found hurricane-force winds (64 knots and above) in North Pacific mid-latitude storms in every month from October to April, peaking in December, with 15 to 23 such storms per season in its 2001–2004 records. They are not typhoons, so they do not follow the tropical calendar.
What Anxin does: For October–April sailings we check blocking and bracing on stuffing photos before sealing and confirm the full DG data are on the manifest.
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, with other agencies, requires pre-notification before dangerous goods move within the port. Applications for dangerous goods acceptance go through its Pacific Gateway Portal, and handling must follow the Canada Shipping Act and the TDG Act.
What Anxin does: We give the carrier and its agent the complete DG data for Port Coquitlam early enough for the port authority's acceptance process, and pass the same data to the consignee's trucker.
TDG Regulations s. 9.3 let an international consignment move by road to or from Port Coquitlam under IMDG classification, marks, labels and documents. The shipping document must still be legible in English or French and show a 24-hour telephone number, and a container must carry placards under TDG Part 4 or the IMDG Code.
What Anxin does: We check that the DG declaration is in English, carries a 24-hour number that the consignee has arranged and matches the container's placards before the documents go to the Canadian trucker.
British Columbia's 2025 recycling amendments bring products that contain or use batteries of 5 kg or less, portable power stations and separately sold replacement batteries under producer responsibility. Producers must file an EPR plan by 15 December 2026 and run the program from 1 October 2027.
What Anxin does: For goods sold in British Columbia after landing at Port Coquitlam, we flag the 2026 plan deadline to the importer so the brand owner's EPR membership is settled before the program starts.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Shenzhen export filings, the carrier booking and the Canada import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packaging certificate and MSA filing disagree; shipment flagged | Dongguan → Yantian | Line-by-line comparison before filing | Anxin with the declarant |
| Heavy-weather damage in a winter storm | North Pacific, Oct–Apr | CINS stuffing checks | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
Questions
Yes. TDG s. 9.3 allows IMDG documentation and marks for an international consignment going to or from a port, provided the document is legible in English or French and carries a 24-hour number.
Weather is the main risk on this crossing: NOAA recorded hurricane-force North Pacific storms from October to April, most often in December. We tighten the packing checks for those sailings.
Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
