Lithium batteries for Grimsby go out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season. On the way they face a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and they arrive at the port of Grimsby.
British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading, UK battery producer registration with a BPRN, and 24-hour dangerous goods notice to the harbour master.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Grimsby and at customs in United Kingdom.
ESS units loading at Qingdao fall under a Shandong MSA waterway safe-transport guide written for lithium battery energy storage systems at the province's coastal ports, so preparation should follow that guide alongside the IMDG Code.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.
Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot has since November 2024 covered water-to-water transhipment of lithium batteries and other 'new three' cargo between Dagang and Qianwan, with one outbound cargo report and no more than one packing inspection within the pilot ports. In the launch case, three cargo and three ship reports became one cargo and two ship reports.
What Anxin does: If your cargo is stuffed at a Dagang yard or reaches Qianwan by water, we check at booking whether it qualifies for the pilot and file once, so the box is not reopened between terminals.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Grimsby decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
The road leg out of Grimsby is regulated by the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009, which make ADR the rulebook for dangerous goods on British roads, with national derogations. UN 3480 moves as class 9, so the haulier needs the same package and UN details as the ocean declaration.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Grimsby matches what left Qingdao.
Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.
What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.
More than a tonne of portable batteries a year puts a UK producer into a battery compliance scheme, which it must join by 15 October ahead of the compliance year and which then registers and reports on its behalf. Below that threshold the producer registers directly on the NPWD and reports tonnage and chemistry by 31 January.
What Anxin does: We ask the UK importer whether it is a large or small portable producer and which scheme covers it, and put battery weights per chemistry on the packing list.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Qingdao filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Grimsby.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate filing or reopening between Qingdao terminals | Dagang → Qianwan | Pilot eligibility checked at booking; single cargo report | Anxin with the declarant |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Annual tonnage return missing shipments | UK producer | Weight and chemistry recorded per shipment | Importer / producer |
Questions
Yes. As producer it registers with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, and shows its BPRN on invoices to business customers.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Under Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot (since November 2024), water-to-water transhipment between Dagang and Qianwan needs one outbound cargo report and at most one packing inspection. We confirm eligibility at booking.
