This route runs out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season, then follows a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean; at the far end is the port of Aliaga.
On the Turkish side battery importers need TAP membership and a TAREKS environmental compliance permit. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Aliaga and at customs in Turkey.
The China Meteorological Administration lists sea fog among the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mostly between April and July and with a serious effect on shipping. At Qingdao a fog hold can shift a battery container onto another vessel, and its DG filings must follow.
What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.
Shandong MSA has issued a waterway safe-transport guide specifically for lithium battery energy storage systems at Shandong coastal ports, so ESS units shipped from Qingdao should be prepared with that provincial guide in mind as well as the IMDG Code.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.
Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Aliaga most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Aliaga uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.
Turkish clearance needs CE evidence where EU directives apply, an invoice in triplicate showing HS code and origin, an uncorrected certificate of origin and an original bill of lading with three copies, all describing the same goods.
What Anxin does: We check the declaration of conformity, invoice and certificate of origin against each other before the originals are sent to the importer in Turkey.
Turkish rules forbid distributors from selling battery brands that are not covered by a collection system, and require them to take back waste batteries free of charge. A brand shipped to Aliaga before its importer has joined the system can end up unsellable in Turkish retail.
What Anxin does: We ask the importer to confirm the brand is registered in its collection system before the first shipment leaves Qingdao.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Qingdao export filings, the carrier booking and the Turkey import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fog hold forces a vessel change after filing | Qingdao, Apr–Jul | Slack in schedule; amendment-ready filing | Anxin with the declarant |
| Security incident near Bab el-Mandeb changes the routing or adds surcharges | Southern Red Sea | Routing and surcharges stated in writing before booking | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
Questions
Yes. Under Communiqué 2017/15 battery imports go through a risk-based TAREKS inspection before the customs declaration is registered.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
