This route runs through Qingdao's Qianwan terminals, then follows a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane; at the far end is the port of Marseille Fos.
France asks for a batteries IDU and eco-organisme membership before the first sale. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
A SYDEREP IDU and eco-organisme membership for every battery category, with EU duties from CE marking to the importer's address on the battery.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Marseille Fos and at customs in France.
The China Meteorological Administration lists sea fog among the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mostly between April and July and with a serious effect on shipping. At Qingdao a fog hold can shift a battery container onto another vessel, and its DG filings must follow.
What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.
The 43% of Mediterranean services not using the Red Sea sail round the Cape of Good Hope, then back through Gibraltar. SAMSA estimates about 200 of the 576 containers lost at sea in 2024 went overboard near the Cape, 35% of the year's total.
What Anxin does: On Cape sailings we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.
From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to France for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.
What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for France we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.
Sea cargo for the EU needs a complete Entry Summary Declaration under ICS2 Release 3, and for deep-sea containers it is due 24 hours before loading at the departure port. Carriers apply 'no manifest, no load', and a filing without a valid EORI number is rejected, so a data gap in Qingdao leaves the box on the quay.
What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Qingdao cut-off.
Until 2025 the French batteries stream covered portable batteries. From 18 August 2025 producers of all five categories, including industrial and EV batteries, must join an approved eco-organisme or have an individual system approved. Batribox and ecosystem hold approvals for all categories to the end of 2030; Corepile's members now deal with ecosystem.
What Anxin does: For storage and industrial packs we ask which eco-organisme covers the category, because an ESS shipment to Marseille Fos falls under the same rule as consumer cells.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Qingdao filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for France before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Marseille Fos.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fog hold forces a vessel change after filing | Qingdao, Apr–Jul | Slack in schedule; amendment-ready filing | Anxin with the declarant |
| Heavy weather off South Africa on a Cape sailing | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing checks | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Industrial batteries placed on the market with no eco-organisme | French REP enforcement | Category and eco-organisme confirmed at booking | Producer |
| ENS not filed and the box is refused at loading | Loading port, Qingdao | EORI and house-bill data passed to the filer at booking | Filer (carrier / forwarder) |
Questions
24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Marseille Fos. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
