Lithium batteries for Ronne go out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season. On the way they face a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic, and they arrive at the port of Ronne.

Denmark registers battery producers through Dansk Producentansvar. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • One-document pilot
  • Fog season Apr–Jul

Route profile

What sets Qingdao → Ronne apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Baltic via the Danish straits

The Baltic is reached only through the Danish straits, where deep-draught ships are advised to take pilots, and its northern ports set ice-class restrictions every winter.

Import country

Denmark

Registration with Dansk Producentansvar via virk.dk, a Danish authorised representative for foreign sellers, and the EU-wide battery and ICS2 duties.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Qingdao → Ronne route

Listed from loading in Qingdao to import into Denmark, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

One filing for transhipment between Qingdao terminals

Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot has since November 2024 covered water-to-water transhipment of lithium batteries and other 'new three' cargo between Dagang and Qianwan, with one outbound cargo report and no more than one packing inspection within the pilot ports. In the launch case, three cargo and three ship reports became one cargo and two ship reports.

What Anxin does: If your cargo is stuffed at a Dagang yard or reaches Qianwan by water, we check at booking whether it qualifies for the pilot and file once, so the box is not reopened between terminals.

  2. Sea corridor

Through the Danish straits, possibly on a feeder

Cargo for Ronne has to pass the Danish straits. IMO recommends pilots on Route T for ships of 11 m draught or more, and the Danish Maritime Authority reports ships that ignore the recommendation to their flag state. Whether the box stays on one vessel or is transhipped onto a feeder at a North Sea port, each vessel has to accept the UN numbers.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and the feeder operator on the booking and confirm DG acceptance for that leg as well as the mainline.

  3. Import country

The truck leg out of Ronne runs under ADR

Road delivery from Ronne is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Denmark haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Qingdao.

  4. Import country

Safety documentation for stationary storage systems

Since 18 August 2024 a stationary battery energy storage system placed on the EU market must be safe in normal operation, and its technical documentation must show testing against the Annex V safety parameters, from thermal shock and short-circuit protection to over-discharge and thermal propagation. Buyers of ESS cabinets in Denmark increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Denmark we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead limits in portable batteries

Annex I of the Battery Regulation caps mercury at 0.0005 %, cadmium at 0.002 % and lead at 0.01 % by weight in portable batteries, and the lead limit has applied since 18 August 2024. Market surveillance in Denmark can ask the importer to show that the goods meet these limits.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Denmark importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Qingdao → Ronne

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Qingdao

  • Confirmation whether the Dagang–Qianwan one-document pilot applies; a single cargo report filed at the first port of loading
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • EU declaration of conformity and CE marking photo from the manufacturer
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems

Carrier and voyage

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the Denmark end

  • Haulier in Denmark briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Instructions and safety information in the language Denmark requires

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Qingdao export filings, the carrier booking and the Denmark import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Qingdao → Ronne: questions we are asked

ADR, which the EU applies to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E).

Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.

Under Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot (since November 2024), water-to-water transhipment between Dagang and Qianwan needs one outbound cargo report and at most one packing inspection. We confirm eligibility at booking.
