From Ningbo to Tyne, cargo moves through Ningbo's Beilun or Meishan terminals under Zhejiang MSA's 2026 battery guide, crosses a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and is discharged at the port of Tyne.
Great Britain runs its own post-Brexit pre-filing and battery producer rules. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Beilun and Meishan exports under Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide, which trims duplicate filings but not the carrier's own document checks.
UK producer registration, a compliance scheme for portable batteries above 1 tonne a year, and import clearance through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Tyne and the United Kingdom market.
Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide sets a concrete loading test: no half of the container's length may carry more than 60% of the cargo weight, and packages must be braced. On board, deck stowage should be inside fire-fighting coverage and shaded from direct sun, and under-deck stowage in holds with temperature probes.
What Anxin does: We ask for the load plan before stuffing and check the 60% split on the stuffing photos, and we pass the shading and away-from-heat stowage request to the carrier on the booking.
Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
The Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016 bar bringing dangerous goods into a British harbour area without notice to the harbour master at least 24 hours ahead (and no more than six months), unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period. The notice carries UN numbers, names and quantities, so the vessel's data depend on the booking.
What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.
Once the box is off the quay at Tyne, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Tyne matches what left Ningbo.
The UK limits mercury to 0.0005 % and cadmium to 0.002 % by weight in batteries, with listed exceptions, and a battery with more than 0.004 % lead must show the symbol Pb below the bin symbol. OPSS enforces these rules for batteries sold in the UK.
What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for a substance statement covering mercury, cadmium and lead and file it with the shipment documents for the UK importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Ningbo filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Tyne.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven load rejected at the Ningbo packing check | Beilun / Meishan stuffing | Load plan checked before stuffing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Harbour notice late or wrong | Tyne harbour area | DG data frozen before departure | Carrier / agent |
Questions
Yes. As producer it registers with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, and shows its BPRN on invoices to business customers.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
