Ningbo to Aqaba
East China Sea · Taiwan Strait · Malacca Strait · Andaman Sea · Indian Ocean · Gulf of Aden · Bab-el-Mandeb · Red Sea
This route runs through Ningbo-Zhoushan, where Zhejiang MSA's guide sets a 60% weight-balance test for battery containers, then follows a corridor drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and up the Red Sea; at the far end is Aqaba, where the DG arrival declaration and MSDS reach the terminal a day before the ship.
Jordan lets only an authorised forwarding agent file the electronic customs declaration. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
Bab-el-Mandeb rated SUBSTANTIAL, piracy back in the Gulf of Aden, and a final leg through one of the warmest seas in the world.
A DG arrival declaration and MSDS to the terminal 24 hours before the ship, a terminal decision on yard storage or direct delivery, and fines for misdeclaration.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Ningbo to import into Jordan, each with what we do about it.
Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 guide gives a measurable loading rule: neither half of the container's length may hold more than 60% of the cargo weight, and packages must be braced. On deck, battery boxes should sit within fire-fighting coverage and out of direct sun; below deck, in holds fitted with temperature probes.
What Anxin does: We ask for the load plan before stuffing and check the 60% split on the stuffing photos, and we pass the shading and away-from-heat stowage request to the carrier on the booking.
Since Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide, a Ningbo shipper no longer attaches the UN38.3 test summary at the MSA cargo-report stage (the carrier receives it instead) and does not resubmit the safety data sheet for an unchanged maker, owner and model. Carriers must still review the documents and turn away batteries that fail the ship-carriage standard JT/T 1543-2025.
What Anxin does: We send the UN38.3 summary and SDS to the carrier with the booking request, and keep a per-model file so repeat shipments use the SDS already on record.
Piracy has returned to the Gulf of Aden: the JMIC rated it SUBSTANTIAL in September 2026, and four merchant ships hijacked off Somalia this year, including the product tanker MT HONOUR 25, were still being held.
What Anxin does: We check the carrier's routing and security surcharges for Aqaba at each booking rather than relying on an older quote.
For Aqaba, the terminal receives the DG arrival declaration and MSDS 24 hours ahead and then allocates each box to yard storage, direct delivery or the security committee; direct delivery means trucks in place two hours before the crane reaches the bay.
What Anxin does: We send the SDS with the DG declaration at booking and tell the importer to have trucks and its clearance agent ready in case Aqaba assigns direct delivery.
Jordan requires importers of commercial goods to be registered traders, and trading companies must hold an importer's card from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply or pay a customs bond linked to the value of the goods. A buyer without the card turns the clearance of a battery container into a bonding exercise.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask the Jordanian buyer whether it holds an importer's card and which authorised forwarding agent will clear the container at Aqaba.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Ningbo filings, the carrier booking and the Jordan import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven load rejected at the Ningbo packing check | Beilun / Meishan stuffing | Load plan checked before stuffing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Carrier rejects booking over UN38.3 / JT/T 1543-2025 documents | Ningbo booking stage | UN38.3 summary and SDS sent with the booking request | Shipper with Anxin |
| Piracy threat in the Gulf of Aden | Gulf of Aden | Current routing and surcharges confirmed per booking | Carrier |
| Direct delivery assigned and no trucks waiting | Aqaba Container Terminal | Importer briefed before arrival | Importer |
| Importer has no importer's card | Jordan Customs | Card or bond confirmed at booking | Importer |
Questions
No, but the importer must provide an Arabic translation, and only an authorised forwarding agent can file the electronic customs declaration.
Either through Bab-el-Mandeb, on the same vessel or after transhipment, or the long way round Africa and south through the Suez Canal. Container lines were being selective in September 2026, so we ask each carrier for its current routing and name it, with any risk surcharge, in the quote.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
