Asia – Mediterranean via Suez
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Lithium batteries for Gioia Tauro go through Ningbo's Beilun or Meishan terminals under Zhejiang MSA's 2026 battery guide. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Gioia Tauro.
Italy expects the producer to be on the Chambers of Commerce battery register before the first sale. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.
Registration with the Chambers of Commerce battery register (through an Italian representative for foreign producers), the number on every commercial document, and the EU-wide CE and label duties.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Gioia Tauro and the Italy market.
Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 guide gives a measurable loading rule: neither half of the container's length may hold more than 60% of the cargo weight, and packages must be braced. On deck, battery boxes should sit within fire-fighting coverage and out of direct sun; below deck, in holds fitted with temperature probes.
What Anxin does: We ask for the load plan before stuffing and check the 60% split on the stuffing photos, and we pass the shading and away-from-heat stowage request to the carrier on the booking.
The JMIC's September 2026 update put the northern Red Sea and the Suez Canal at MODERATE, with two-way transits and container lines selectively returning, and the Eastern Mediterranean at LOW. On this corridor the exposure lies at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, not at the canal itself.
What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.
A battery entering Italy has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Gioia Tauro.
What Anxin does: We pass the Italy importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.
Road delivery from Gioia Tauro is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).
What Anxin does: We give the Italy haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Ningbo.
Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Italy: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.
What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Italy importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Ningbo export filings, the carrier booking and the Italy import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven load rejected at the Ningbo packing check | Beilun / Meishan stuffing | Load plan checked before stuffing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Stock shipped without the label due from August 2026 | Importer in Italy | Label status confirmed before booking | Manufacturer / importer |
| Road route planned through a category E tunnel | Road leg from Gioia Tauro | Tunnel code (E) passed to the haulier with the transport data | Haulier / forwarder |
| Importer details missing from battery and packaging | Importer in Italy | Address block sent to the factory before packing | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
