Ningbo to Cochin
East China Sea · Taiwan Strait · South China Sea · Malacca Strait · Andaman Sea · Indian Ocean
From Ningbo to Cochin, cargo moves from Zhejiang's battery and energy-storage makers via Ningbo-Zhoushan, crosses the Indian Ocean monsoon corridor, and is discharged at the port of Cochin.
In India the BIS R-number must match the manufacturer, model and factory on crsbis.in. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Beilun and Meishan exports under Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide, which trims duplicate filings but not the carrier's own document checks.
India checks BIS registrations online, treats importers as EPR producers and wants the Bill of Entry early.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Cochin and the India market.
Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide sets a concrete loading test: no half of the container's length may carry more than 60% of the cargo weight, and packages must be braced. On board, deck stowage should be inside fire-fighting coverage and shaded from direct sun, and under-deck stowage in holds with temperature probes.
What Anxin does: We ask for the load plan before stuffing and check the 60% split on the stuffing photos, and we pass the shading and away-from-heat stowage request to the carrier on the booking.
Colombo handled a record 8.29 million TEU in 2025, about 81% of it transhipment, and roughly 45% of that transhipment is linked to Indian trade. A container for Cochin may well be discharged in Colombo and reloaded onto a feeder, so the DG declaration and the booking have to cover both vessels.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier at booking whether the service to Cochin relays in Colombo or elsewhere, and check that the DG acceptance covers the feeder leg too.
IMD puts the normal monsoon onset over Kerala at 1 June; in 2026 it came on 4 June and then spread north, reaching the whole country around mid-July. Battery cartons arriving at Cochin in this period need to stay dry through discharge and delivery.
What Anxin does: For monsoon-season arrivals at Cochin we ask for cartons with moisture protection and tell the consignee to plan unstuffing under cover.
Lithium-ion cells and batteries are under BIS's Compulsory Registration Scheme (IS 16046 Part 2). The manufacturer needs its own registration, and the R-number goes into the Bill of Entry at Cochin; batteries without it cannot be cleared.
What Anxin does: Before booking we ask for the manufacturer's BIS R-number and check that it covers the models and factory named in the shipment.
Indian customs expect the Bill of Entry by the end of the day before the vessel arrives at Cochin; it can be filed up to 30 days ahead, and late filing attracts charges. The BIS and DG details must be ready by then.
What Anxin does: We send the importer's broker the invoice, packing list and BIS details as soon as the ship sails from Ningbo, so the Bill of Entry can be filed early.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Ningbo filings, the carrier booking and the India import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven load rejected at the Ningbo packing check | Beilun / Meishan stuffing | Load plan checked before stuffing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Late Bill of Entry charges | Indian port of discharge | Documents sent at sailing | Importer's broker |
Questions
They verify the registration on crsbis.in, including manufacturer, model and factory location, and refuse deferred or cancelled registrations.
The India Meteorological Department describes two North Indian Ocean seasons, April–May and October–December, the latter being the main one.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
