From Lianyungang to Trenton, cargo moves from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, crosses a corridor into Atlantic Canada's waters, and is discharged at the port of Trenton.

The US side adds a 25% Section 301 duty line, forced-labour scrutiny of lithium supply chains and an ISF deadline that falls before loading. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Lianyungang export
  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • Supply-chain tracing file
  • HTS code 8507.60

Route profile

What sets Lianyungang → Trenton apart

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Sea corridor

Asia – Atlantic Canada, the St Lawrence and the North Atlantic

A final leg through North Atlantic or St Lawrence waters, with ice from December to May and winter storms that peak in January.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Lianyungang → Trenton shipments get held up: 5 points

Listed from loading in Lianyungang to import into United States, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Sea corridor

Ice in the Gulf of St Lawrence, December to May

The Canadian Coast Guard's icebreaking season on the Gulf of St Lawrence and the St Lawrence River typically runs from December to May, and ships must clear with ECAREG CANADA 24 hours before entering, declaring their ice class. Winter sailings to Trenton depend on the vessel's ice capability and on icebreaker routing.

What Anxin does: For December–May arrivals we ask the carrier whether the vessel or feeder serving Trenton is ice-classed and build slack into delivery.

  3. Import country

The emergency response number has to be answered live

US rules want a numeric emergency response telephone number on the shipping paper for battery cargo that leaves Trenton by road, monitored for as long as the goods are in transport and answered by a person with the emergency information for UN3480 or UN3090. A call-back service fails the test (49 CFR 172.604); only the IMDG waiver for cargo that never touches a public highway avoids it.

What Anxin does: Before sailing we confirm who provides the 24-hour number for the US leg, usually the importer's emergency response provider, and put it with the contract reference on the DG documents we send to the trucker.

  4. Import country

AMS: the manifest CBP sees before the ship leaves Lianyungang

Under 19 CFR 4.7 the carrier's cargo declaration must be in CBP's Automated Manifest System 24 hours before loading abroad. Without it, or with inaccurate data, the permit to unlade the container at Trenton can be delayed or refused.

What Anxin does: We give the carrier or NVOCC the final cargo description, HS code, UN number and package count before the documentation cut-off in Lianyungang, so the AMS filing and the DG manifest say the same thing.

  5. Import country

CPSC certificate data now filed at entry

Since 8 July 2026, importers of consumer products that are subject to a CPSC certification requirement must electronically file the certificate data at entry; goods entered from a Foreign Trade Zone follow on 8 January 2027. Whether a battery-powered product is caught depends on the rules that apply to that product, not on the battery alone.

What Anxin does: We ask whether the goods are consumer products that need a CPSC certificate and, if so, who files it, so that the question is settled before the goods arrive.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Lianyungang → Trenton

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Lianyungang, before the box is loaded

  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • 'Made in China' marking on articles or containers checked on photos
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • In winter: ice capability of the vessel or feeder serving the port confirmed
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For import into United States

  • CPSC certificate data and eFiling arrangement, if the product is subject to certification
  • Importer of record and the licensed customs broker who will file the entry
  • ISF filer named; stuffing location and consolidator sent right after packing

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Lianyungang filings, the carrier booking and the United States import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Trenton

For lithium-ion batteries classified in HTSUS 8507.60.0020 and entered from 1 January 2026, USTR set the Section 301 additional duty at 25%; EV traction batteries in 8507.60.0010 have been at 25% since 2024. Other duties can apply on top. The importer's customs broker confirms the classification and total duty; we make sure the invoice gives the broker enough detail to do so.

Rarely. The Seaway's maximum draft in the Montreal–Lake Ontario section is 8.00 m and it closes in winter (target 5 January 2027 for the 2026 season), so containers usually leave the ocean vessel at a coastal port and continue by smaller ship, rail or truck.

Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
