From Lianyungang to Port Talbot, cargo moves through Lianyungang port, crosses a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and is discharged at the port of Port Talbot.

British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Lianyungang → Port Talbot route

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Port Talbot and the United Kingdom market.

  1. Origin port

Energy storage on break-bulk ships: Lianyungang's own rules

Lianyungang MSA's June 2025 guide for ESS on break-bulk ships treats ESS cabinets as UN3480 and ESS containers as UN3536, recommends a remaining charge of 20–50%, and requires converters and monitoring to be powered off, series and parallel circuits disconnected, packages evenly spread with a low centre of gravity, and a safety meeting before the ship arrives.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm the UN number the unit ships under, get the state of charge and isolation steps in writing from the manufacturer, and join the pre-arrival safety meeting with the stowage details.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Port Talbot decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Import country

Harbour master notice a day ahead under DGHAR

Under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, dangerous goods may not enter a British harbour area unless the harbour master has had notice at least 24 hours (and at most six months) in advance, or has agreed a shorter period. UN numbers, names and quantities are part of that notice, so the vessel's report is only as good as the booking data.

What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.

  4. Import country

Industrial battery producers register within 28 days and put the BPRN on paperwork

In the UK the importer is usually the battery producer. Industrial and vehicle battery producers register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, report tonnage, chemistry and brand by 31 March, and must take waste industrial batteries back from end-users free of charge. Their BPRN goes on invoices and delivery notes to business customers.

What Anxin does: For storage and industrial packs we ask the UK importer for its BPRN before booking and add it to the documents we prepare.

  5. Import country

Bin symbol and capacity label under the 2008 regulations

Great Britain still labels batteries under the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008: a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol of a set minimum size on every battery, moved to the packaging only when the battery is too small or cannot practically be marked, and a capacity in mAh or Ah on portable rechargeables and on the front of their packaging.

What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Lianyungang, because relabelling after discharge at Port Talbot means opening dangerous goods packages.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Lianyungang → Port Talbot

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Before loading in Lianyungang

  • For ESS: UN3480 or UN3536 confirmed, state of charge and circuit isolation stated in writing
  • Substance statement for mercury, cadmium and lead from the manufacturer
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into United Kingdom

  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries
  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Port Talbot.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Lianyungang → Port Talbot route

Yes. As producer it registers with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, and shows its BPRN on invoices to business customers.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
