Lithium batteries for Viana do Castelo go through Lianyungang port. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at the port of Viana do Castelo.

On the Portuguese side, APA's SILiAmb register and the EU importer checks both apply. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Lianyungang export
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • SILiAmb / APA registration

Route profile

How Lianyungang → Viana do Castelo differs from other lanes

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Import country

Portugal

Portugal's SILiAmb register at APA on top of EU duties: CE marking, the 2026 label and 2027 QR code, and ADR for the road leg.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Lianyungang to Viana do Castelo

They run from the Lianyungang terminal through the voyage to Viana do Castelo and the Portugal import file.

  1. Origin port

Yellow Sea fog from April to July

The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mainly from April to July. At Lianyungang, as at Qingdao, fog can hold vessels at anchor, and a changed vessel means amended DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Sea corridor

The inbound leg's emissions now count under EU ETS

Because Viana do Castelo is an EU port, container ships of 5,000 GT or more calling there fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, which covers half the emissions of the voyage from China. Lines surrendered allowances for 70% of those emissions in 2025 and must cover 100% from 2027, a cost that can reach shippers as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  3. Import country

Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

The Battery Regulation's general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label implementing act, if later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027, linked to a battery passport for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Where the battery is too small, both go on the packaging and accompanying documents.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Portugal importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  4. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Portugal for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Portugal we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead limits in portable batteries

Annex I of the Battery Regulation caps mercury at 0.0005 %, cadmium at 0.002 % and lead at 0.01 % by weight in portable batteries, and the lead limit has applied since 18 August 2024. Market surveillance in Portugal can ask the importer to show that the goods meet these limits.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Portugal importer; we do not test batteries.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Portugal before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Viana do Castelo.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
