Asia – Mediterranean via Suez
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Lithium batteries for Venice go out of Lianyungang, where the MSA simplified 'new three' filings in 2024. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Venice.
The Italian side adds the registropile.it registration to the EU battery rules. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.
Registration with the Chambers of Commerce battery register (through an Italian representative for foreign producers), the number on every commercial document, and the EU-wide CE and label duties.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Lianyungang terminal through the voyage to Venice and the Italy import file.
The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mainly from April to July. At Lianyungang, as at Qingdao, fog can hold vessels at anchor, and a changed vessel means amended DG filings.
What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.
The 43% of Mediterranean services not using the Red Sea sail round the Cape of Good Hope, then back through Gibraltar. SAMSA estimates about 200 of the 576 containers lost at sea in 2024 went overboard near the Cape, 35% of the year's total.
What Anxin does: On Cape sailings we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.
For Venice, EU security pre-filing happens at the other end of the voyage: the ICS2 entry summary must reach the system 24 hours before the container is loaded in Lianyungang. No filing means no loading, and a missing EORI number is enough to reject it.
What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Lianyungang cut-off.
Once registered, the producer has 30 days to show its register number on all commercial documents, and each year by 31 March it reports the batteries placed on the Italian market. If the batteries arrive inside equipment, the importer is also an EEE producer and needs the separate RAEE register.
What Anxin does: We put the Italian register number the importer gives us on the commercial invoice we prepare with the shipper, and ask whether the goods are loose batteries or built into equipment.
A battery entering Italy has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Venice.
What Anxin does: We pass the Italy importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Lianyungang filings, the carrier booking and the Italy import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy weather off South Africa on a Cape sailing | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing checks | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Commercial documents without the register number | Importer in Italy | Number added to the invoice before shipment | Importer / shipper |
| ENS not filed and the box is refused at loading | Loading port, Lianyungang | EORI and house-bill data passed to the filer at booking | Filer (carrier / forwarder) |
| Importer details missing from battery and packaging | Importer in Italy | Address block sent to the factory before packing | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
Not directly. A producer not established in Italy registers through its own representative in Italy, whose Chamber of Commerce handles the filing on registropile.it with a digital signature.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
