From Lianyungang to Civitavecchia, cargo moves through Lianyungang port, crosses a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and is discharged at the port of Civitavecchia.

The Italian side adds the registropile.it registration to the EU battery rules. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

Route profile

The Lianyungang → Civitavecchia route in brief

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Lianyungang and Civitavecchia: 5 points

Listed from loading in Lianyungang to import into Italy, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Lianyungang's break-bulk guide for ESS

For energy storage shipped on break-bulk vessels, Lianyungang MSA's June 2025 guide classes ESS cabinets as UN3480 and ESS containers as UN3536, recommends 20–50% remaining charge, and requires converters and monitoring switched off, series and parallel circuits disconnected, packages spread evenly with a low centre of gravity, and a safety meeting before the ship arrives.

What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm the UN number the unit ships under, get the state of charge and isolation steps in writing from the manufacturer, and join the pre-arrival safety meeting with the stowage details.

  2. Sea corridor

Mediterranean services are back in the Red Sea more than others

Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 show 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services routed via the Red Sea, against 27% for North Europe. For Civitavecchia the Suez routing is therefore the likely one, and it runs through Bab el-Mandeb, which the JMIC rated SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026: the Houthis describe their blockade as selective, and they now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Civitavecchia uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

CE marking and a declaration of conformity in the right language

The importer in Italy carries the check: CE marking on the battery and an EU declaration of conformity, translated into the language Italy asks for, have both been required since 18 August 2024 for batteries entering the EU market.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer in China for the declaration of conformity and a photo of the CE marking on the battery or its packaging before loading, and pass them to the Italy importer. We check that the documents exist and match the goods; we do not assess conformity.

  4. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

The Battery Regulation asks the importer to put its own name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address, with a single contact point, on the battery. Only when the battery's size or nature makes that impossible may the details move to the packaging or an accompanying document, so a Italy importer's details need to reach the factory before printing.

What Anxin does: We pass the Italy importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  5. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Italy for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Italy we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Italy before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Civitavecchia.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
