From Lianyungang to Piraeus, cargo moves from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, crosses a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and is discharged at a transhipment hub where the container terminal wants the dangerous goods file a day before the ship.

The Greek side adds EMPA registration to the EU battery rules. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Multimodal DG form (IMDG)

Route profile

How Lianyungang → Piraeus differs from other lanes

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Lianyungang → Piraeus route

They run from the Lianyungang terminal through the voyage to Piraeus and the Greece import file.

  1. Origin port

Four cargo-side documents at Lianyungang, each checked

Under Lianyungang MSA's Notice No. 1 of 2024 the cargo side of a 'new three' filing needs four items: safe-carriage declaration, packing certificate signed by an inspector, packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney. A shorter list puts more weight on each paper, and the packing certificate still requires a certified inspector after supervised stuffing.

What Anxin does: We prepare the four cargo-side documents together and check that the packing certificate, the packaging certificate and the declaration describe the same UN numbers and quantities.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Piraeus

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Piraeus most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Piraeus uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Destination port

Segregation and stacking set by the terminal system

After checking the file, PCT loads the dangerous goods records into its CATOS system, which decides safety checks, segregation and where a unit may be stacked. A box whose data change after arrival has to go through that process again, which matters most for containers transhipped at Piraeus.

What Anxin does: We avoid changing DG data after departure; if a correction is needed, it goes to the carrier before the vessel reaches Piraeus.

  4. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Greece has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Piraeus.

What Anxin does: We pass the Greece importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  5. Import country

Safety information in a language Greece accepts

An importer has to ensure that batteries are accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in Greece can easily understand, as the Member State determines. Inserts and carton print are much simpler to adjust before packing in China.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Greece requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

  6. Import country

Due diligence on battery raw materials from August 2027

Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 pushed the Battery Regulation's due diligence duties for cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite back to 18 August 2027 and gave the Commission until 26 July 2026 for its guidelines. Buyers in Greece are already collecting the supply-chain information they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Greece buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Lianyungang to Piraeus

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Lianyungang

  • The four cargo-side documents under Lianyungang MSA Notice 2024 No. 1 prepared together and cross-checked
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards

At the Greece end

  • Instructions and safety information in the language Greece requires
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Haulier in Greece briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Lianyungang export filings, the carrier booking and the Greece import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Piraeus

The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Under its Notice No. 1 of 2024, the cargo side submits the DG safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney.
