Lianyungang to Kiel
Yellow Sea · Malacca Strait · Indian Ocean · Bab-el-Mandeb · Suez Canal · Strait of Gibraltar · English Channel · Danish Straits
From Lianyungang to Kiel, cargo moves out of Lianyungang, crosses a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic, and is discharged at the port of Kiel.
The German side adds producer registration with stiftung ear and the EU Battery Regulation's labelling calendar. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.
EU Battery Regulation labelling and QR-code dates, stiftung ear registration under the BattDG, and an ICS2 entry summary that must exist before the box is loaded.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Kiel and the Germany market.
The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mainly from April to July. At Lianyungang, as at Qingdao, fog can hold vessels at anchor, and a changed vessel means amended DG filings.
What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.
Because Kiel is an EU port, container ships of 5,000 GT or more calling there fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, which covers half the emissions of the voyage from China. Lines surrendered allowances for 70% of those emissions in 2025 and must cover 100% from 2027, a cost that can reach shippers as a surcharge.
What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.
EU pre-arrival security filing moved to ICS2 Release 3: sea cargo needs a complete Entry Summary Declaration, and forwarders issuing house bills of lading have had to file or pass house-level data since 1 April 2025. For deep-sea containers the ENS is due 24 hours before loading at the departure port, and carriers apply 'no manifest, no load'. A missing EORI number is enough for the filing to be rejected.
What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, a goods description at HS level and the house-level parties at booking, and make sure they reach whoever files the ENS ahead of the Lianyungang loading cut-off.
Once the container leaves the terminal by road, ADR applies: Directive 2008/68/EC makes EU countries use it for domestic dangerous goods journeys as well as international ones. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E), so the haulier in Germany has to plan around category E tunnels, and damaged or defective batteries fall under special provision 376 and packing instructions P908 or P911 instead of P903.
What Anxin does: We give the Germany haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Lianyungang.
Article 11 of the Battery Regulation says that from 18 February 2027 portable batteries inside appliances must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user using commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, except under limited derogations. Appliances sold in Germany after that date need a design that complies.
What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Germany we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Germany before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Kiel.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emissions surcharge changes between quote and sailing | EU port call | Surcharge shown as a separate line | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
| ENS not lodged in time | Loading port in China | House-level data and EORI collected at booking and passed to the filer ahead of the loading cut-off | Anxin with the ENS filer |
| Road route planned through a category E tunnel | Road leg from Kiel | Tunnel code (E) passed to the haulier with the transport data | Haulier / forwarder |
Questions
Under ICS2 Release 3 the entry summary declaration for deep-sea containers is due 24 hours before loading at the departure port, and carriers do not load boxes without it. The consignee's EORI number and the house bill of lading parties are part of that data set.
Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.
Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
