From Lianyungang to Brunsbuttel, cargo moves out of Lianyungang, crosses a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and is discharged at the port of Brunsbuttel.

Germany expects the battery to be registered, labelled and pre-declared before it is loaded in China. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Lianyungang export
  • Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE
  • German-language safety information
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

What sets Lianyungang → Brunsbuttel apart

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Lianyungang and Brunsbuttel: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Brunsbuttel and the Germany market.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Sea corridor

Cape waters saw about a third of 2024's container losses

Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  3. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead limits in portable batteries

Annex I of the Battery Regulation caps mercury at 0.0005 %, cadmium at 0.002 % and lead at 0.01 % by weight in portable batteries, and the lead limit has applied since 18 August 2024. Market surveillance in Germany can ask the importer to show that the goods meet these limits.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Germany importer; we do not test batteries.

  4. Import country

Label, QR code and passport dates under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

The Battery Regulation phases in the information a battery must carry. The general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label-format implementing act, if that comes later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027. For EV, light-means-of-transport and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, that QR code must open a battery passport. Where the battery is too small, the label goes on the packaging and documents instead. Stock that leaves Lianyungang without these elements cannot simply be relabelled on the quay in Brunsbuttel.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Germany importer to confirm which battery category the goods fall into and that label, QR code and passport data are settled. We check carton and label photos against that answer; we do not certify conformity.

  5. Import country

    German-language instructions and safety information

The importer must make sure each battery travels with instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in the Member State easily understand, as that Member State determines. For consumer goods going to Germany, the practical reading is German-language safety text, and it has to be in the carton when the goods are placed on the market.

What Anxin does: When we review packing photos we note whether the inserts or labels show the required language, and we raise gaps with the shipper before stuffing rather than after arrival.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Lianyungang to Brunsbuttel

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Lianyungang end

  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For import into Germany

  • Battery Regulation label / QR-code status, and battery passport where the battery is EV, LMT or industrial above 2 kWh
  • Haulier in Germany briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg
  • Consignee EORI number and the party filing the ICS2 entry summary

Before you book

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Lianyungang filings, the carrier booking and the Germany import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Brunsbuttel

The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Germany requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
